Portland Saturday Market Opening Day

Saturday, March 1
Considered to be the largest continually operating arts and crafts fair in the US, this spectacular bazaar is returning to Tom McCall Waterfront for its 51st year with 150+ vendors. Check it out every Saturday, rain or shine.

Mardi Gras Celebration

Tuesday, March 4
Get ready to catch some beads at this giant, free, and family-friendly parade. Festivities kick off at 7 p.m. with several businesses along the parade route offering special deals on drinks, desserts, and more.

Be sure to wear something green — no one likes getting pinched.

Cheer for local boxers as they take on Irish fighters, join the Shamrock Run, watch Irish dancing and bagpiping, and imbibe a pint or two at Oregon’s largest St. Patrick’s Day celebration.

From the festival that made the world’s largest Irish coffee in 2023 comes a giant tent full of bagpiping, Irish whiskey, Guinness, Irish dancing, and green-hued fun at Paddy’s Bar and Grill.

Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival

Late March to mid-May
More than 1 million tulips representing 100+ varieties create a 40-acre, multi-color dreamland to explore.

Portland Rose Festival

Friday, May 23-Sunday, June 8
The long-running city tradition bursts into bloom every May; highlights include CityFair, Fleet Week, parades of flower-laden floats, a “queen’s court” of local high school students, and the Milk Carton Boat Race.

Festival of Balloons

Friday, June 20-Saturday, June 22
Every year, Tigard’s Cook Family Park hosts the Festival of Balloons, and even when gusty conditions ground hopes to see the colorful craft in full flight, attendees are still treated to a candlestick glow (igniting the burner without the envelope attached) and some tethered rides. There is also a carnival with live music, absolutely enormous corn dogs, and plenty of vendors.

The music is electric and the show is pyrotechnic at the Waterfront Blues Festival.

Portland Pride Festival & Parade

Expect a weekend chock-full with exhibitions, vendors, entertainment on multiple stages, and lots and lots of community.

Pickathon Music Festival

Friday, Aug. 1-Monday, Aug. 4
Expect to be introduced to a wide variety of new artists at this “experiential music festival.”

Vanport Jazz Festival

Friday, Aug. 1-Saturday, Aug. 2
This festival is named in honor of Black Oregonians who moved to Portland after being displaced by a flood in 1948. “Discover the legacy” of those early Portland jazz artists with a lineup including Jon B. and Norman Brown.

Hood & Portland To Coast Relay

Friday, Aug. 22-Saturday, Aug. 23
The largest running/walking relay race in the world traverses 196 miles of Oregon, starting at Mount Hood and ending on the coast. The route passes through the heart of Portland, so feel free to do some cheering.

Time-Based Art Festival

Thursday, Sept. 4-Sunday, Sept. 14

This nearly two-week long multidisciplinary arts festival by the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art includes art in many forms, ranging from experimental operas to performance lectures.

Rose City Comic Con

Friday, Sept. 5-Sunday, Sept. 7

“Stranger Things” star David Harbour is one of just many familiar faces you might see at the biggest pop culture convention in PDX.

Portland Trail Blazers up for sale

Let’s address the trail-blazing elephant in the room. The Portland Trail Blazers are up for sale after existing under the ownership of the Paul Allen estate since 1988.

The sale is going through per a request in Allen’s will to sell the sports team “at some point.” It’s rightfully caused quite a bit of commotion — especially since Nike co-founder Phil Knight, a speculated prospect who expressed acquisition interest in 2022, is no longer looking to buy.

Naturally, we’re all a little nervous about the idea of getting the Seattle Sonics treatment. So, let’s go through some important points that will help you understand the headlines you’re sure to see over the next few months.

What do you get when you buy a team?

The purchase of a team is much like buying a business. The owner, depending on how ownership is split up, has control over player + coach contracts, franchise rights, the team’s brand, any existing broadcasting or sponsorship deals, and ownership of the sports stadium if the team has it (which the Blazers don’t).

How much are the Blazers worth?

The Blazers have the 23rd highest valuation out of the NBA’s 30 teams with an estimated ~$3.6 billion. If you’re curious, Paul Allen bought the Trail Blazers for $70 million in 1988 — quite the ROI.

However, Sportico is estimating that the team will sell for $4-5 billion once all is said and done.

If the team gets bought, will they move somewhere else?

Unfortunately, this isn’t a definite “no” right now. However, there are some factors working in favor of the Blazers staying here at home.

The potential NBA expansion
The NBA has already invested billions in adding two new teams (likely in Seattle and Las Vegas) to the league within the next couple of years. Relocating the Trail Blazers would likely cannibalize the money investors expect to make in the other cities. And why move when you’ve already got something that works?

A lot of local investment has gone into the team
We don’t just mean the emotional kind. There’s the active lease on the Moda Center that runs until 2030. There’s team infrastructure like the Blazers’ training facility. There’s the ties with our new WNBA team. Not that any of these would prevent a move on their own, but they’re all things that would make the decision surprising, should it happen.

Until then, we’ll just have to wait patiently to see how this plays out, which may take months. But if the Blazers hit the road, we’ll be right there with you with a box of tissues + a hug.

In this guide, we’ve rounded up everything you need to know about Portland sports, so whether you’re already a devoted Portland sports fan or you’re new to the area, we hope it can serve as a valuable resource.

The very first Portland Trail Blazers team

Portland Trail Blazers | Est. 1970

When Sports promoter Harry Glickman brought basketball to his hometown in Portland he fulfilled a decades-long dream. Seven years later, first-year Head Coach Jack Ramsay — known for his iconic plaid pants — took the Blazers to the promised land, roaring back from a two-game deficit to win the 1977 NBA Championship. Trail Blazers coaches, players, and fans come together under the banner of “Rip City,” a moniker spontaneously invented by legendary broadcaster Bill Schonely. On December 19, 2022, Damian Lillard passed Clyde Drexler to become the team’s all-time leading scorer.

Where they play: Moda Center

Initially, the Blazers played at Veterans Memorial Coliseum. They moved to the larger Rose Garden (now named the Moda Center) in 1995.
From 1977 to 1995, the city was gripped by Blazermania and the team set a record 814 consecutive home sellouts (the only sports franchise in the US to since surpass this mark is the Boston Red Sox).

Mascot: Blaze the Trail Cat

This silver-and-white mountain lion joined the squad in 2002.
For two years (1987-1989) Bigfoot was the Blazers’ on-court costumed character. Though he disappeared for decades, his descendant Douglas Fur recently took up the mantle, leaving behind the forest for the hardwood.

Team colors: Red, black, and white

Five lines on each side (representing opposing teams) come together to form the Trail Blazers pinwheel logo. Between 2004-2007, gray was added to the color palette.

NBA champions (1977)
3x Western Conference champions (1977, 1990, 1992)
Bill Walton remains the only Blazers player to win the NBA MVP Award (he also won the NBA Finals MVP Award).

Portland Timbers (MLS) | Est. 1975

Throughout their history, the Timbers have played in different leagues in various forms — the North American Soccer League, United Soccer League, and Major League Soccer, which it joined in 2011. Early on, its ravenous fans helped earn Portland the nickname “Soccer City USA.” For the most exciting game in club history, look no further than the “Double Post.”

Where they play: Providence Park

The ground has had many names throughout the years — from Multnomah Stadium to Jeld-Wen Field — and is one of the most-historic venues of any US soccer club.

Mascot: Timber Joey

For every goal and clean sheet (when the keeper doesn’t allow a score), Timber Joey cuts a slab from the Victory Log with a chainsaw and presents it to the deserving player.

Team colors: Ponderosa green, moss green, gold, and white

The double-sided ax logo is not only an homage to the Portland area’s logging industry, but it also serves as a stylized “T.”

Portland Thorns (NWSL) | Est. 2012

As a founding member of the National Women’s Soccer League, the Thorns went on to win the very first championship, defeating the Western New York Flash 2-0. Since then, the club has won a league record three titles, with the most recent success coming in 2022.

Where they play: Providence Park

The arena’s latest renovation was completed in 2019, adding three new levels, two new video boards, LED field lighting, an updated sound system, locker room upgrades, and more. Its current capacity is 25,218.

Team colors: Red, black, white, and green

Portland’s nickname as Rose City inspires many aspects of the club, from the floral logo to the actual roses that players receive when they score a goal (or prevent them from going in the net).
By Any Other Name (#BAON) is a team slogan and reference to the line “a rose by any other name would smell as sweet” in Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.”

Portland Winterhawks (WHL) | Est. 1950

The junior ice hockey team began its history as the Edmonton Oil Kings, before moving to Portland in 1976 for a cheaper stadium deal. Today, the team plays in the Western Hockey League (WHL), which is one of three leagues that comprise the Canadian Hockey League (CHL). Many alumni of the team have gone on to have successful careers in the National Hockey League (NHL), including Hall of Famers Mark Messier, Marian Hossa, and Cam Neely.

Where they play: Veterans Memorial Coliseum

The 12,000-seat arena opened in 1960 in honor of veterans from all wars.
Prior to the 2021-2022 season, the Winterhawks played games at both the VMC and the Moda Center.

Mascot: Tommy (formerly known as Tom A. Hawk)

The Winterhawks were often wrongly confused (and understandably so) as a farm team for the Chicago Blackhawks because their logos were so similar. But it simply stems from the fact that the owners of the two teams knew each other, and the jerseys that the very first Winterhawks team wore were a used set of Chicago jerseys.
In 2021, the Winterhawks partnered with local apparel company Portland Gear and designer Brian Gundell for a complete identity rebranding.

Team colors: Biscuit black, buzzer red, squall gray, celly gold, and ice white

The modernized logo incorporates several meaningful details. The two feathers are a nod to the previous logo. Mount Hood anchors the team in Portland, and within that design, you can see a “W” and an “H.”

Portland Pickles (WCL) | Est. 2015

Perhaps Portland’s wackiest sports team plays a collegiate woodbat baseball in the South Division of the West Coast League. You can catch these dill-igent athletes going head-to-head with other local squads like the Portland Rosebuds, Gresham Greywolves, and more.

Where they play: Walker Stadium

Pickles games are known for zany promotions, like “California People Moving to Portland” and “Woof Wedensday.”

Mascot: Dillon T. Pickle

Where do we begin? From the infamous mascot theft to the unfortunate photo cropping incident, this beloved 7-ft jolly green giant is always up to hijinks and capers.

Team colors: Navy blue, green, and white

The team’s clean uniforms evoke the verdant forests and pristine waters of the region.

Rose City Rollers | Est. 2004

The Rose City Rollers is actually a roller derby league that encompasses 17 different teams and programs, and claims to be the largest in the world. Its all-star team — the Wheels of Justice — competes on the international level and has won the world championship four times, more than any team except the Gotham Derby of New York City.

Where they play: The Hangar at Oaks Amusement Park

The crowd can feel the energy from the same level as the flat track.

Team colors: Purple

Between the sound of revving chainsaws and thousands of screaming fans, opposing quarterbacks don’t have a chance.

Oregon State Beavers football | Est. 1893

This school first fielded a team when it was called the Oregon Agricultural College, winning the game 64-0. More than a century of unforgettable moments and rich football history followed. In the modern era, conference realignment and the dissolution of the PAC-12 makes their future murky, but leave it to the Beavers to stand firm against the flow. Will there always be support in the stands? Dam right.

Where they play: Reser Stadium

Known as Parker Stadium until 1999, the naming rights were changed when Al and Pat Reser, of Beaverton-based Reser’s Fine Foods, made a seven-figure donation to the athletics department. A $161-million remodel was finished ahead of the 2023 season.

Fight song: “Hail to Old OSU”

Mascot: Benny Beaver

This bucktoothed buddy has been a mainstay since it was officially adopted in 1952, replacing a menagerie of other characters including a live coyote named Jimmie and “Doc Bell,” a Corvallis pastor and regent for the school.

Team colors: Orange, black, and white

Clean lines and simplified design are the threads that weave together tradition and looking ahead, as you can see in the evolution of logos over the years.

On Saturdays in the fall, flocks of fans wearing green and yellow join the migration south from Portland to “Shout” for their team. As new members of the Big Ten, opponents will be less familiar these days, but the Ducks’ long-standing rivalry and battle for the Platypus Trophy remains.

Where they play: Autzen Stadium

Known for having one of the loudest crowds for its size (54,000), this venue consistently makes visiting teams shake in their cleats. Fun fact: the outline of the stadium, plus the shape of nearby Hayward Field, is inspired the iconic O logo. It’s also named for an OSU alum, Thomas J. Autzen.

Mascot: The Duck

From crushing push-ups to “College GameDay” appearances and even crashing weddings, this fluffy friend is known for putting a smile on people’s faces wherever UO goes. He’s also a marked improvement over Mandrake and the original live duck (although the Puddles moniker lives on in the lore).

The concert scene is truly unmatched in our area — from major arenas to pianos in the park, there’s a stage for any type of tune. Get to know them all with our local guide.

Arenas

Moda Center, 1 N. Center Court St. | When the biggest names come to town — think Elton John — they make a stop here, surrounded by thousands of cheering fans. It can also be reconfigured to the Theater of the Clouds, which lowers the number of seats to no more than 6,500, creating an up-close experience.

Veterans Memorial Coliseum, 300 N. Ramsay Way | As the original venue at the Rose Quarter, this building has seen plenty of history since it was built in 1960, hosting The Beatles, Johnny Cash, Queen, and the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, just to name a few.

Concert halls

Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, 1037 SW Broadway | Beneath the dazzling lights of the Portland sign, guests enter a three-level foyer and are immediately met with restored Italian Rococo Revival architecture. Inside the theater, the Oregon Symphony (the sixth oldest orchestra in the US) plays for dedicated crowds.

Keller Auditorium, 222 SW Clay St. | Known as the “workhorse” of Portland’s Centers for the Arts due to the diversity of events it puts on, guests can enjoy everything from Broadway musicals to operas with a dash of concerts, including groups like Wilco and Natalie Merchant.

Revolution Hall, 1300 SE Stark St., Ste. 203 | The brick building that once housed Washington High School now contains offices and a live music venue inside the former auditorium. Before the show, concertgoers can grab a beer and soak up the views from the rooftop bar. On the ground level, venue-within-a-venue Show Bar hosts The People’s Jam, a free monthly community performance.

Mississippi Studios, 3939 N. Mississippi Ave. | Billed as the “musician’s music venue,” this award-winning location and the attached Bar Bar are like heaven for live music lovers. Unbroken sight lines and quality A/V specs make for a smooth show devoid of unwanted distractions.

Restaurants and bars

White Eagle Saloon, 836 N. Russell St. | Though perhaps not the most iconic McMenamins concert venue in the city — we see you Crystal Ballroom — this ivy-adorned, allegedly haunted rock hotel is decked out in musical memorabilia and band photos. Order some Cajun tots and let the rhythm fill your soul.

The Goodfoot, 2845 SE Stark St. | You’ll find pool, pinball, and pub grub on the ground level and plenty of singing and dancing in the basement. If you’re looking for a neighborhood hangout, this is your place.

Landmark Saloon, 4847 SE Division St. | Boot scootin’ boogie over to this country music outpost in the city, where cowboy hats and rhinestones are always acceptable — especially on Whiskey Wednesdays.

Intimate spaces

The Old Church Concert Hall, 1422 SW 11th Ave. | Portland’s “Sanctuary of Sound” began life in 1882 as a place of worship built in the Carpenter Gothic style, and was eventually saved from demolition by community members in the 1960s. Today, it’s operated as a nonprofit, non-religious, all-ages venue whose stage is beautifully framed by stained-glass windows and a massive pipe organ.

Doug Fir Lounge, 301 SE Morrison St. | This venue is in the process of moving into the former home of Le Bistro Montage. Shows are expected to return Summer of 2025.

Piano. Push. Play., Locations vary | For more than a decade, this nonprofit has rescued old pianos and tuned them up, turning them into one-of-a-kind pieces of art that are then scattered across the streets and parks of Portland. The instruments are available for anyone to play, leading to impromptu concerts that bring people together. Fans can purchase a passport and visit each location to earn a stamp, hidden in the pianos’ benches.

It remains unclear if Pickathon will return in 2024 since its permit has expired.

Festivals

Pickathon, 16581 SE Hagen Rd., Happy Valley | This experimental music festival distills the sounds of summer into far-out design, weaving nature, curated food and drink, plus conviviality into an unforgettable experience. Attendees can even camp in the nearby woods, ensuring they never miss a moment. Lineups regularly feature local bands and under-the-radar talent.

Portland Jazz Festival, Locations vary | Over the course of 10 days, lovers of all things musically improvised can take in ~100 events across the City of Roses. Performances range from sold-out headliners to underground shows where you can post up in a corner booth and chill.

Portland Music Month, Locations vary | Held throughout the first month of the year, this is the ideal time to cross many of the aforementioned (and beyond) venues off your bucket list. Portland Winter Ice Rink skates back to the waterfront for an encore

It’s hard to believe it, but the holiday season is speed skating its way right at us, and with it comes the return of a new tradition — the Portland Winter Ice Rink.

Following a successful first season, Prosper Portland is planning an icy encore in the same spot, next to Tom McCall Waterfront Park at the west end of the Morrison Bridge (499 SW Naito Pkwy.), from Saturday, Nov. 16 through Sunday, Jan. 5.

Visitors will be able to rent skates and do their best Michelle Kwan during 90-minute skate sessions, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. each day (the ice is resurfaced between each session). Afterward, pay a visit to the Winter Village, where you’ll find art, music, food, and cozy warm beverages.

Parking is available on site for $4 per hour or $9 for the whole day.

Portland City Council approves plan to renovate Keller Auditorium, build new PSU venue

For months, Broadway’s future in Portland has been uncertain. Should the current venue — Keller Auditorium — be renovated or replaced?

The Portland City Council has made its decision: both.

Setting the stage

At 107 years old, the city-owned Keller Auditorium is not prepared to endure a serious earthquake and needs upgrades to meet modern seismic safety standards, but closing the venue presents obvious logistical challenges. As the only performing arts center in Portland equipped to host traveling Broadway shows, an extended closure would mean a pause in programming — disrupting union jobs and costing millions of dollars in lost revenue.

Portland State University proposed an alternative to prevent that outcome: build a new, larger performing arts complex on its campus just blocks away from the Keller. Meanwhile, the Halprin Landscape Conservancy, a nonprofit collection of local developers, championed a proposal to renovate the existing Keller Auditorium.

In August, the City Council asked PSU and the Halprin Landscape Conservancy to explore the idea of a joint project and essentially figure out a solution that makes everyone happy.

The show must go on

A resolution to move forward with plans for two Broadway-capable venues in downtown Portland was unanimously passed by the City Council last week. A new arts center will be built first at the south end of PSU’s campus on Southwest Lincoln Street — a project estimated to take about five years — while shows continue at the Keller. When the new PSU venue opens in 2029, the Keller will close for renovations and reopen in 2031. It will remain city-owned.

Early estimates put the total cost of the joint venture, which includes the possible addition of a hotel and conference center, at ~$857 million. Potential funding sources include philanthropic giving along with local, state, and federal dollars.

The next step is a market feasibility study to assess optimal seating capacities, financial feasibility + construction times, and traffic impacts.

The Portland Greek Festival is back for the 71st year

Although it doesn’t have the staying power of say, the Parthenon, the Portland Greek Festival is certainly a time-honored tradition in our city. It returns for the 71st time, Friday, Oct. 4 through Sunday, Oct. 6, at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral.

Admission is $5 (for guests 12 and over) and utilizes a contact-less wristband system where you are able to load funds via an online platform. The celebration’s roots trace back to the late 1800s, when Greek immigrants settled in the PNW and worked in the fishing, lumber, and railroad industries.

Today, their vibrant culture and cuisine is shared with 15,000 guests annually at what’s become an Oregon Heritage Tradition. Dine on gyros and loukoumades, watch traditional folk dances, take a tour of the church, and explore the artifacts at the Hellenic-American Cultural Center & Museum.

Parking is available on surrounding streets, with a limited number of handicap spaces in the annex lot.

Portland's illuminated martini glass in the West Hills

Clue: A beverage container that inspired a 30-ft display in the West Hills that, when lit, unofficially signals the start of the holiday season.

Question: What is a martini glass?

Ding ding ding.

Portland’s iconic, illuminated martini glass is soon to shine bright once again. It’s a familiar sight this time of year — but do you know the story behind it? Bottoms up, we’re jumping back in time.

An Italian family named the Martinis were the first to build a martini glass sign in the West Hills — albeit on a smaller scale — which they would light up to signal a party was happening. After the family moved away, a high schooler in the neighborhood named Monty Meadows decided to keep the tradition going. He made a larger version of the sign using two-by-fours and some borrowed Christmas lights, and then affixed it to the side of his family’s home.

Wintry Northwest weather had other ideas, though. The rickety sign was blown down and repaired multiple times until Monty’s dad offered to help. Together, the duo improved the emblem every year, adding stronger aluminum piping and more lights. By the time Monty’s parents separated in 1982 and the family home was put up for sale, the sign was iconic enough that the new buyer insisted it be included in the deal.

A red slash was added to the sign at one point to discourage drunk driving.

Fast forward a few decades to when the property changed hands again. The buyer — Portland architect Aaron Hall — tore down the house in 2013 and built a new one, but the effort took years… and the martini glass was sorely missed. “Everybody was calling, saying ‘Where’s the sign, where’s the sign?’” Aaron told KOIN 6 News. “I said, ‘It’s coming back. I just have to build the house first.’”

True to his word, Aaron has not only maintained the tradition but he’s also improved upon the sign’s design. In 2015, he unveiled a three-story-tall martini glass (complete with a “stuffed” green olive) that uses LED technology and sports a sleeker, more modern look. And while Aaron himself doesn’t drink, he shakes up a mean martini for his guests.

When is the worst time to drive in Portland?

Traffic is at its worst between 3 and 5 p.m. on weekdays. In the morning, 7-8 a.m. can also be dicey.

But the hands-down worst time to commute? 4 p.m. on a Thursday. 2.8% of Portland’s weekly delay happens around then.

When is the best time to drive in Portland?

Technically, that would be around midnight. But if you work a nine-to-five, here’s our advice:

Head to work by 6 a.m. or wait until 9 a.m.
If you can leave work early, head out by 2 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 1 p.m. on Fridays.
If your boss is watching, you’ll need to stay at your desk until at least 6 p.m. Or grab a nearby bite from a happy hour spot, and wait out the traffic until 7 p.m.

What about public transit?

Bus, street car, tram — pick your ride. At least you aren’t footing the gas bill.

Bicycling is also a great option. Good for traffic congestion... and your calves.

When is the worst time to drive in Portland?

When is the best time to drive in Portland?

Technically, that would be around midnight. But if you work a nine-to-five, here’s our advice:

Head to work by 6 a.m. or wait until 9 a.m.
If you can leave work early, head out by 2 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 1 p.m. on Fridays.
If your boss is watching, you’ll need to stay at your desk until at least 6 p.m. Or grab a nearby bite from a happy hour spot, and wait out the traffic until 7 p.m.

What about public transit?

Bus, street car, tram — pick your ride. At least you aren’t footing the gas bill.

Bicycling is also a great option. Good for traffic congestion... and your calves.

Pamana, 15 NW 4th Ave. | Filipino
The founders of Baon Kainan — which won Eater Portland’s Best New Cart award in 2021 — opened earlier this month inside Old Town’s Hoxton hotel. The residency is only open for six months, so hurry if you want to try dishes like these.

The cidery’s gothic-style new taproom is the perfect, moody setting for a fall beverage. The space includes reupholstered church pews and offers 30 beers, wines, and ciders on tap.

All you need to know about Portland International Airport

Traveling via plane is fun — jet-setting over beautiful blue waters or rolling hills, taking in cloud formations, and landing in a completely different location in a matter of hours is unlike anything else.

The whole navigating the airport part? Less exciting, and sometimes pretty stressful. To help make your time at Portland International Airport as smooth as possible, we’ve created a guide that covers everything from gates and parking to details on some of the airport’s nonstop flights.

Current airport updates

If you’ve been to Portland International Airport recently, you’ve likely seen construction on its new main terminal — complete with a 9-acre Douglas fir ceiling, 49 skylights, trees that recreate “a walk through the forest.” It’s all part of a $2 billion investment to improve and grow PDX, which already expanded Concourse E, updated Concourse B, and consolidated the ground transit system.

This multi-phase development is expected to be completed in December 2025, but Phase 1 landed last August with:

New check-in counters reoriented into four “islands”
A streamlined security process
New exhibits showcasing local artists
Pre-security stadium seating, a mezzanine restaurant, and new restrooms
The ability to get to all four concourses post-security
14 local restaurants, shops, and kiosks, including local favorites like Stumptown Coffee Roasters, Loyal Legion, and Powell’s Books, in addition to larger brands like Pendleton and Columbia

PDX is still working on Phase 2, meaning construction walls will remain in the main terminal until both phases are open. The ongoing construction allows for fewer flight reductions and delays, but means travelers may face detours.

PDX recommends allotting extra time for your travels, and your experience may look different during construction thanks to relocated bathrooms and longer detours to access Concourses B and E. Arriving passengers will also need to follow temporary, rerouted exit lanes.

Phase 2 will add more exits and escalators to baggage claim, additional all-user restrooms, new mosaic art, and waiting areas. It will also bring the total number of new retailers to 24, with shops opening through early 2026.

Two new video walls will display a 24-hour art installation with Oregon-inspired landscapes that change according to the time of day, the weather, and how many people are traveling through PDX.

What to know

Parking | Not everyone has a bestie who will drop everything to pick them up from their 3 a.m. landing. Each lot and garage costs $4 an hour; beyond that, the price per day ranges from $15-$30 per day. PDX also recommends Broadway Cab Company, TriMet MAX, or Caravan Airport Transportation if you’d prefer a shuttle, rideshare, or taxi service.
TSA | According to the PDX website, travelers should arrive at the airport two hours before a domestic flight during the busy early morning hours, or three hours before an international flight. Use this handy tool to check security wait times.
Map it out | If you’re like us and need to completely visualize a place before you step foot inside, these maps of the entire airport will be your saving grace.
Food and drink | From Southern comfort food at Screen Door to craft beer at Deschutes Brewery, Portland International Airport is home to a plethora of acclaimed eatery outposts. We put together a list of restaurants and where to find them within the airport.
Reminder | As of May 7, 2025, you now need a REAL ID (or another acceptable form of identification, like a valid passport) to board commercial flights in the US.
Flight status | While we recommend staying updated via your respective airline, you can also check the airport’s dashboard for your flight status in a pinch.
