The pandemic certainly put a damper on international travel, but you don’t need a plane ticket to experience global bites + keep things fresh in Portland. In fact, around town you can chow down on fare from all six continentssorry Antarctica, but eating penguin is actually illegal.

When the “same old same old” is getting stale, re-introduce your appetite to your sense of adventure and pay a visit to these delectable cuisines.

Africa

  • Horn of Africa, 5237 NE Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. | Variety is the spice of life + the beauty of buffets. Here, the gourmet fah-fah, oxtail, chicken kebab, and other dishes tell the story of Djibouti, Somalia, and Ethiopia.

Asia

  • Top Burmese, 413 NW 21st Ave. | Recipes from Myanmar, like samosa soup, shan noodles + beef paratha curry are already phenomenal, but the novelty of having robot servers bring you the food elevates this experience to a whole new level.

Europe

  • Ingrid’s Scandinavian Food, 209 7th St., Oregon City | We promised no 13-hour flights, but we didn’t say you wouldn’t have to travel a little bit. Thankfully, the lefse and Norwegian meatball wrap (made with Surkål, a slow braised sweet and sour cabbage + Gjetost cheese sauce) make the trek to Oregon City worth it.

North America

  • Jamaican Homestyle Cuisine, 441 N Killingsworth St. | Island specialties like jerk wings and black rum cake are only as far as North Portland. 100% of the spices are sourced from Jamaica, giving you authentic aromas + flavors.

Oceania

  • Proud Mary Café, 2012 NE Alberta St. | Vegemite on toast may be unfamiliar, but if your taste buds skew down under, this branch of the Melbourne-based coffee shop offers it + other delicious brunch plates.

South America

  • Tita’s Kitchen, 7238 SE Foster Rd. | This food cart brings the essence of Peru to the Mt. Scott-Arleta neighborhood. Whether you grab a lomo saltado or chicharron sandwich, both of which are fantastic, make sure to order the sweet fried plantains side.
