A meal to remember 🥪

Lardo to honor local chef with sandwich

On the morning of Tues., Oct. 4, chef Sarah Pliner, co-founder of Aviary and one of Portland’s most celebrated chefs, was hit and killed by a truck while riding her bicycle.

The impact of this tragedy lingers over the city’s culinary scene, while also bringing fresh scrutiny to transportation safety — now local sandwich shop Lardo is doing its part to drive what it sees as vital and necessary improvements.

Every month, the restaurant puts a new “Chefwich” on the menu designed by a visiting cook. Throughout November, guests can order a duck banh mi, made with Sarah’s own recipe. The crispy duck confit, duck liver mousse, spicy green papaya salad, and Kewpie mayo are mouth-wateringly good.

Proceeds from this item will go to The Street Trust, a nonprofit that strives to make Portland’s streets safer for cyclists and pedestrians.
THE WRAP

Today’s issue was written by Ben.

Editor’s pick: Tomorrow, I set off on a 10-day overseas adventure in Japan, which will take me to Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and the mountainous region of Hakone.

I may be thousands of miles from Portland, but I plan on stopping by a familiar watering hole — Bible Club Osaka — the sister to our very own Sellwood speakeasy. So, it’s sayonara for now.
