Side hustles to make extra money in Portland

Good people of Portland, ever wish you had more spending money lining your pockets? If the holiday gift fund has been looking a little low, we’ve got four leads for a side hustle that you can implement now.

And for those already bringing home the bacon — if you need extra storage space, a place to park your car, or help with outdoor upkeep, this story is for you, too.

💸 Turn that empty garage, attic, or shed into moola

  • A parking spot in Nob Hill is practically worth gold. Become a storage host on Neighbor to rent out anything from closets to parking spots + driveways to sheds. Listing your space is free + you’ll give another Portlander the storage space they’ve been needing (if that’s you, surf the local listings here).

💸 Convert your hobbies into services for hire

  • Picture this: You’re leading a yoga class at Skidmore Bluffs or snapping engagement photos at Cathedral Park, and you’re getting paid. Land local gigs by advertising your services for free on Thumbtack. You can list pro skills like dog training, notarizing, and assembling furniturebasically, the sky’s the limit. And for those looking for hired hands, browse local pros for jobs like house cleaning or interior painting.
Two people hold hands as they walk up a flight of stone steps surrounded by park greenery with a line of large gothic-style bridge supports in the background.

Put your camera to use by booking engagement photo shoots in your free time.

💸 Get into the Airbnb game

  • Spruce up a spare room, apartment, or house for an extra cash stream, plus the opportunity to tell tourists how great shopping in the West End is. Just make sure you familiarize yourself with restrictions within certain city limits. List on Airbnb, or if you’ve got an entire private residence vacant, list on Vrbo. Draw inspiration from staycation destinations like this house with a zen garden.

💸 Dash dinners for dough

  • We all know hungry Portlanders love nothing more than getting their Expatriate cheeseburgers and Mirisata curries delivered, so sign up to be a Dasher with Doordash. You can choose your own hours and ride around town on your car, scooter, or bicycle. If all that food talk just made you hungry, here are the highest-rated restaurants available for delivery near you.

The statewide general election is on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2022.

Voting in person? There are 75 ballot drop sites open until 8 p.m. today across Multnomah, Washington, and Clackamas counties. Find the one nearest you with this drop box locator. 🗳

Voting by mail? Ballots must be mailed with a valid postmark by 8 p.m. on Nov. 8 to be counted. 📫

What’s on the ballot? One of the biggest local questions Multnomah County voters will answer is Measure 26-228 which would restructure city government and the process for electing city officials, including the creation of a ranked-choice voting system. Another measure — Measure 26-232 — proposes adopting a more commonly used version of ranked-choice voting for county officials.

There’s also the race for Position 3 on Portland City Council between incumbent Jo Ann Hardesty and challenger Rene Gonzalez.

You can keep tabs on election results by visiting Oregon’s secretary of state website.
THE WRAP

Today’s issue was written by Cambrie.

Editor’s pick: Blame it on the weather, but I’m ready for the holidays to get underway — and I don’t have to wait long for an official kickoff.

Downtown Portland’s Christmas tree will arrive at Pioneer Courthouse Square this Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 10 a.m. Santa will be there to hand out gift cards as the tree — which was grown on sustainable forestlands in Clatsop County — is lifted into place. ‘Tis the season. 🎄
