Hello Thursday.

June 30 2022

A rose by many other names 🥀

Like people, roses come in a wide variety. Some are audacious. Others may appear demure, but then wow you with a fragrant aroma — yes, we’re anthropomorphizing flowers, but it’s fun.

So, stop whatever else you’re doing (but please keep reading) and join us as we take a big whiff of Portland’s International Rose [Personality] Test Garden.

Forever Yours | Photo by PDXtoday

🌹 Forever Yours

Where to find them: Bed E16

Traits: Loyal, romantic, passionate

Whether you put down roots on purpose or drifted here on the breeze, you fell in love with the Willamette Valley soil and never looked back. Your idea of an unforgettable date night is dinner and a movie, and there’s nothing wrong with that. When it comes to defending your friends and family — like that time they shorted you on popcorn — you’re never afraid to paint the roses red.

🌹 Cloud 10

Where to find them: Bed B4
Traits: Optimistic, aloof, generous

Even amid the wettest spring on record, you never fail to find a silver lining in those neverending clouds. Some might say you wear a certain color of glasses … cough, cough … but your lovable demeanor attracts people who always make sure you don’t stumble into a bramble. In the past, you’ve repaid their kindness with concert tickets that you won on the radio and surprise donut deliveries.

Tiddly Winks | Photo by PDXtoday

🌹 Tiddly Winks

Where to find them: Bed D39
Traits: Energetic, good-natured, funny

How did the bike-riding florist make it to the parade on time? They petal-ed faster. This, and other award-winning jokes, help you absolutely thrive in any group setting, even if the humor is a coping mechanism to distract from your embarrassing nickname.

Here’s the dirt. Traditional laundry detergents are packed with harmful chemicals (think: dyes, sulfates + even microplastics) that are harmful to humans and the environment. That’s why Dirty Labs is changing the game with their nature-inspired, scientifically-driven detergent, which is:

  • Non-toxic and free from carcinogens and hormone-disrupting chemicals
  • Biodegradable, and comes in eco-friendly packaging
  • Hyper-efficient, thanks to Dirty Labs’ enzyme-driven cleaning technology

Plus, even Vogue agrees: it smells amazing.*

Sunrise + Sunset

  • Rise: 5:21 a.m.
  • Set: 9:03 p.m.

Number

  • $3.3 billion. The Multnomah County Board has approved the budget for fiscal year 2023, and it’s the largest in the county’s history. It includes record investments in homeless services and behavioral health (like the funding of ~2,000 adult shelter beds), climate resilience, and support for children + families. 💰
  • $1,000. That’s how much you could win when you take our brief survey. Tell us what you think about the PDXtoday newsletter + be entered to win $1,000 cash. Take the survey. 🗣️

Coming Soon

  • Bullseye. Cedar Mill’s new Target will open Sun., July 17 at 12675 NW Cornell Rd. At 49,00 sqft, it’s a smaller-format store like those common near college campuses or urban neighborhoods. 🎯 (Beaverton Valley Times)

Development

  • Early plans to redevelop the former Lower Albina neighborhood have gained momentum following a meeting between Albina Vision Trust and Portland City Council. Mayor Ted Wheeler tasked the nonprofit to come up with a work plan for the project, which would involve new homes, business incubators, and public parks on the 94-acre site. (The Oregonian/Oregon Live)

Outdoors

  • Have you heard the buzz? In 2019, Tualatin earned the moniker “Bee City USA;” since then, residents have done the hive proud by cultivating pollinator-friendly plants throughout the community. You can play your part during Pollinator Week. 🐝 (KOIN)

Arts

  • The 40th annual Portland Rose Festival Art Show is on display until Wed., June 29 at the Oregon Society of Artists’ gallery (2185 SW Park Pl.). Pieces from more than 50 local artists are on display, depicting the springtime beauty of Portland. Some can be purchased on location or online.

DYK

  • Have you ever wondered where the “X” in “PDX” comes from? The designation lifted off in the 1940s, when the International Air Transport Association had to transition from two to three letter codes due to an increase in airports (and a shortage in distinct codes), so the letter X simply became a placeholder. ✈️ (KGW)

Biz

  • Nimble Distro’s Kites pre-rolls 50-cents-per-pack donation program has donated $17,045 to NuProject, a Portland-based cannabis social equity organization. The distribution and manufacturing company prioritizes social justice in the industry. “We had to ask ourselves, ‘How do we participate in repairing the harm?’” said co-founder Joy Hudson. 🍁 (Portland Inno)

Learn

  • Hola, PDX. If you’re ready to brush up on that high school Spanish, do it the effective (and fun) way with Babbel. Babbel’s speech recognition technology will even help you nail your pronunciation and accent from the get-go. Bonus: Get 60% off your subscription — for a limited time only. *

A health message from our sponsor

  • “Many of the so-called ‘health foods’ in our diets actually contain a harmful toxin. The good news is, avoiding this toxin is very simple — you just have to know which foods contain it.” *

POST OF THE DAY

Flag for freedom

Instagram

📸 @cityofbeaverton

Last week, Beaverton Mayor Lacey Beaty raised the Juneteenth flag outside of City Hall for the first time ever, in honor of the federal holiday that recognizes June 19, 1865, as the effective end of slavery in the US.

According to the flag’s designer Ben Haith, the banner symbolizes citizenship + new beginnings, with callbacks to the news of the Emancipation Proclamation arriving in Galveston, Texas — the Lone Star State. Its colors are also a reminder. “For so long, our ancestors weren’t considered citizens of this country. But realistically, and technically, they were citizens,” he told Capital B.

THE WRAP

Editor’s pick: When I was exploring the sprawling beds of the International Rose Test Garden, it really struck me how beautiful Portland is. The sun was out (and it was 7 p.m.), soothing aromas wafted on the air, and there was even an adorable quinceañera photoshoot happening. City of Roses, indeed.

Missed Friday’s newsletter? We’ve got the details on Grand Lodge’s new summer concert series.
