Clue: A beverage container that inspired a 30-ft display in the West Hills that, when lit, unofficially signals the start of the holiday season.

Question: What is a martini glass?

Ding ding ding.

Portland’s iconic, illuminated martini glass is soon to shine bright once again. It’s a familiar sight this time of year — but do you know the story behind it? Bottoms up, we’re jumping back in time.

An Italian family named the Martinis were the first to build a martini glass sign in the West Hills — albeit on a smaller scale — which they would light up to signal a party was happening. After the family moved away, a high schooler in the neighborhood named Monty Meadows decided to keep the tradition going. He made a larger version of the sign using two-by-fours and some borrowed Christmas lights, and then affixed it to the side of his family’s home.

Wintry Northwest weather had other ideas, though. The rickety sign was blown down and repaired multiple times until Monty’s dad offered to help. Together, the duo improved the emblem every year, adding stronger aluminum piping and more lights. By the time Monty’s parents separated in 1982 and the family home was put up for sale, the sign was iconic enough that the new buyer insisted it be included in the deal.

A red slash was added to the sign at one point to discourage drunk driving.

Fast forward a few decades to when the property changed hands again. The buyer — Portland architect Aaron Hall — tore down the house in 2013 and built a new one, but the effort took years… and the martini glass was sorely missed. “Everybody was calling, saying ‘Where’s the sign, where’s the sign?’” Aaron told KOIN 6 News. “I said, ‘It’s coming back. I just have to build the house first.’”

True to his word, Aaron has not only maintained the tradition but he’s also improved upon the sign’s design. In 2015, he unveiled a three-story-tall martini glass (complete with a “stuffed” green olive) that uses LED technology and sports a sleeker, more modern look. And while Aaron himself doesn’t drink, he shakes up a mean martini for his guests.

Just how bad is the traffic in Portland?

Forget ghosts and ghouls, Portland traffic might be the scariest thing you’ll face this Halloween. Commuters lost an average of 72 hours to congestion in 2024, according to a new Texas A&M report — up 6% from 2023.

The recent report from Texas A&M Transportation Institute found a trip that would take 20 minutes without traffic takes...

28 minutes in the peak direction
44 minutes to plan for a punctual arrival

When is the worst time to drive in Portland?

Traffic is at its worst between 3 and 5 p.m. on weekdays. In the morning, 7-8 a.m. can also be dicey.

But the hands-down worst time to commute? 4 p.m. on a Thursday. 2.8% of Portland’s weekly delay happens around then.

When is the best time to drive in Portland?

Technically, that would be around midnight. But if you work a nine-to-five, here’s our advice:

Head to work by 6 a.m. or wait until 9 a.m.
If you can leave work early, head out by 2 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 1 p.m. on Fridays.
If your boss is watching, you’ll need to stay at your desk until at least 6 p.m. Or grab a nearby bite from a happy hour spot, and wait out the traffic until 7 p.m.

What about public transit?

Bus, street car, tram — pick your ride. At least you aren’t footing the gas bill.

Bicycling is also a great option. Good for traffic congestion... and your calves.

DYK: Sushi is historically a casual finger food? Hamono Sushi, an out-of-the-way downtown place with just 20 dining spots, is the ideal scene for those that want to sit back and ride the sushi wave. Their specialty omakase — which means “I’ll leave it up to you” in Japanese — is a more affordable alternative to many other omakase services.

All you need to know about Portland International Airport

Traveling via plane is fun — jet-setting over beautiful blue waters or rolling hills, taking in cloud formations, and landing in a completely different location in a matter of hours is unlike anything else.

The whole navigating the airport part? Less exciting, and sometimes pretty stressful. To help make your time at Portland International Airport as smooth as possible, we’ve created a guide that covers everything from gates and parking to details on some of the airport’s nonstop flights.

Current airport updates

If you’ve been to Portland International Airport recently, you’ve likely seen construction on its new main terminal — complete with a 9-acre Douglas fir ceiling, 49 skylights, trees that recreate “a walk through the forest.” It’s all part of a $2 billion investment to improve and grow PDX, which already expanded Concourse E, updated Concourse B, and consolidated the ground transit system.

This multi-phase development is expected to be completed in December 2025, but Phase 1 landed last August with:

New check-in counters reoriented into four “islands”
A streamlined security process
New exhibits showcasing local artists
Pre-security stadium seating, a mezzanine restaurant, and new restrooms
The ability to get to all four concourses post-security
14 local restaurants, shops, and kiosks, including local favorites like Stumptown Coffee Roasters, Loyal Legion, and Powell’s Books, in addition to larger brands like Pendleton and Columbia

PDX is still working on Phase 2, meaning construction walls will remain in the main terminal until both phases are open. The ongoing construction allows for fewer flight reductions and delays, but means travelers may face detours.

PDX recommends allotting extra time for your travels, and your experience may look different during construction thanks to relocated bathrooms and longer detours to access Concourses B and E. Arriving passengers will also need to follow temporary, rerouted exit lanes.

Phase 2 will add more exits and escalators to baggage claim, additional all-user restrooms, new mosaic art, and waiting areas. It will also bring the total number of new retailers to 24, with shops opening through early 2026.

Two new video walls will display a 24-hour art installation with Oregon-inspired landscapes that change according to the time of day, the weather, and how many people are traveling through PDX.

What to know

Parking | Not everyone has a bestie who will drop everything to pick them up from their 3 a.m. landing. Each lot and garage costs $4 an hour; beyond that, the price per day ranges from $15-$30 per day. PDX also recommends Broadway Cab Company, TriMet MAX, or Caravan Airport Transportation if you’d prefer a shuttle, rideshare, or taxi service.
TSA | According to the PDX website, travelers should arrive at the airport two hours before a domestic flight during the busy early morning hours, or three hours before an international flight. Use this handy tool to check security wait times.
Map it out | If you’re like us and need to completely visualize a place before you step foot inside, these maps of the entire airport will be your saving grace.
Food and drink | From Southern comfort food at Screen Door to craft beer at Deschutes Brewery, Portland International Airport is home to a plethora of acclaimed eatery outposts. We put together a list of restaurants and where to find them within the airport.
Reminder | As of May 7, 2025, you now need a REAL ID (or another acceptable form of identification, like a valid passport) to board commercial flights in the US.
Flight status | While we recommend staying updated via your respective airline, you can also check the airport’s dashboard for your flight status in a pinch.

The long-running city tradition bursts into bloom every May; highlights include CityFair, Fleet Week, parades of flower-laden floats, a “queen’s court” of local high school students, and the Milk Carton Boat Race.

Festival of Balloons

Every year, Tigard’s Cook Family Park hosts the Festival of Balloons, and even when gusty conditions ground hopes to see the colorful craft in full flight, attendees are still treated to a candlestick glow (igniting the burner without the envelope attached) and some tethered rides. There is also a carnival with live music, absolutely enormous corn dogs, and plenty of vendors.

The music is electric and the show is pyrotechnic at the Waterfront Blues Festival.

Forest Park, Northwest Portland | Hit the trail with your dog. With 40+ access points, there are enough options to fill up days on end (literally — the Wildwood Trail alone is 30 miles long and takes about 12 hours to complete).
Warrior Rock Lighthouse Point, 38151 A&B NW Reeder Rd. | This tail-wagger of a trail stays nearly flat for the entire 7-mile out-and-back route and, as its name suggests, features an old lighthouse. It’s one of just two still operating in Oregon that aren’t on the Pacific Ocean and once housed the PNW’s oldest fog bell.
Trillium Lake Winter Loop, 90312 Mt. Hood Hwy., Government Camp | If your pup enjoys snow, then they’ll love this 4.7-mile trail that’s easy to knock out in an afternoon.
Balch Canyon Loop, 2960 NW Upshur St. | Is there a pot of gold at the top of the rainbow stairs? Try this breezy trail that’s just a little over 2 miles long to find out.
Gillette Lake, Bonneville Trailhead, Stevenson, WA | Enjoy some moderate elevation gain along this nearly 7-mile out-and-back hike that taps into the Pacific Crest Trail. Don’t forget to check your dog for ticks afterward.

Before we dive in, let’s get a lay of the land (er, water). Check out these unique facts about our region’s main rivers:

The Columbia River is the largest river by flow in North America that empties into the Pacific Ocean — 265,000 cubic ft per second on average at its mouth. It also produces the most hydroelectric power on the continent, representing a third of this type of energy source in the US.
11,487 sq miles drain into the Willamette River watershed, or nearly 12% of Oregon. Its source in the Cascade Range, Waldo Lake, is considered one of the purest lakes in the world.

Where the map turns blue

Here are a few local options for getting your feet wet:

Cathedral Park, 6635 N. Baltimore Ave.
Gaze up at the vaulted underbelly of the St. Johns Bridge, Portland’s tallest.

Willamette Falls, 120 McLoughlin Blvd., Oregon City
From the boat launch at Jon Storm Park, paddle 1.5 miles upriver to feel the mist on your face from the second largest waterfall by volume in the country.

Rooster Rock State Park, Interstate 84, Corbett
You can either keep close to the shoreline to watch Columbia River windsurfers, or venture to the calm lagoon beneath the basalt cliffs where the Vista House is perched.

Hagg Lake, Gaston
Half of this large Washington County lake is a wake-free zone, and you can actually rent a kayak for the day through the parks department. Life jackets are also available to loan.

Trillium Lake, NF-2612, Government Camp
Watching the sunrise over Mount Hood while floating these tranquil waters is a bucket list experience.

Silverton Reservoir, 4381 Silver Falls Drive NE, Silverton
No gas motors are allowed on this small lake which also sports floating swimming platforms. Parking is limited and costs $5.

Sellwood Riverfront Park, 1221 SE Oaks Park Way
Set a course for the south end of the city to do a little people and dog watching along the shoreline and maybe even house hunt for a floating home.

Before you float

Last but not least, we should talk about paddling safety so you don’t capsize:

Always wear a PFD (personal flotation device).
If you’re going paddling earlier in the season, make sure to dress for the water temperature.
Start small. Water, especially flowing water, can be intimidating. First-timers should opt for a small lake, pond, or city canal. You don’t want to get in over your head.
Consider a guided adventure from Portland Kayak Company before heading out on your own.

Oregon Zoo | Family memberships available
From Elephant Lands to Predators of the Serengeti, it’s easy to spend hours exploring the many habitats, watching unique creatures go about their day, and learning about conservation. Kids will remember seeing polar bears swimming below the surface and naked mole rats tunneling through the ground.

Frog Pond Farm
Meet the friendly critters that call the farm home, including goats, llamas, donkeys, alpacas, camels, and chickens. “Walk About” visits are available from early May through early September. Kids will remember playing yard games and feeding the animals by hand.

Portland Goat Parties
Three words: baby goat therapy. Schedule a visit at the 18-acre goat paradise, or book a goat party and bring the fun to you. Kids (the human kind) will remember spending time petting and getting up close and personal with the animals.

Alpacas of Oregon
On a tour of this farm you’re able to feed and mingle with the woolly animals, and also shop fleece wares in the barn store. Tickets are $15, but admission for kids ages 5 and under are half price. Kids will remember having a birthday party here.

Franz Bakery
See how the loaves are made at this historic working factory. Groups of 10-40 people can schedule a tour between Labor Day and the end of the school year in June. Kids will remember snacking on fresh bread and butter afterward.

Portland Farmers Market
Some of these markets host a free weekly program May-August where kids can experience hands-on cooking, interactive games, and educational activities. Kids will remember tasting fresh vegetables and meeting the farmers who grew them.

Creo Chocolate
Learn where chocolate comes from and how it’s made on a 1.5-hour tour led by one of the chocolate makers. Kids will remember designing their own chocolate bar to take home, complete with gourmet toppings.

Oregon Historical Society
The museum’s three floors of permanent and rotating exhibits transport visitors back in time to learn about Oregon’s storied history, from pioneer life to Portland’s heyday as the grandest metropolis in the PNW. Kids will remember touching a real beaver pelt and walking through a covered wagon.

Rice Northwest Museum of Rocks & Minerals
Rockhounds won’t be able to take this museum for granite. Explore Earth’s natural wonders and even meet some local geologic residents, like thundereggs, jasper, and sunstones. Kids will remember the glowing rocks and fossilized dinosaur poop.

Lloyd Center Ice Rink

Oaks Amusement Park
One of the country’s oldest continually operating amusement parks has something to keep the whole family entertained, with seasonal outdoor rides, a roller rink, miniature golf, and even an escape room. Kids will remember roller skating inside on a rainy day.

Sky Zone Trampoline Park
Bounce around with the family at this trampoline park featuring a “ninja warrior” course, dodgeball court, sky ladder, climbing wall, and more. Kids will remember the Foam Zone and the freestyle jumping areas.

Pumpkin Ridge Zip Tour
Kids ages 8-12 can zipline with an adult while teens can go solo with supervision. Tours last two hours and feature seven ziplines and two suspension bridges among the treetops. Kids will remember soaring through the forest like a bird.

What is unique about Portland’s small business scene is how much we support each other. We are each others teammates, sounding boards, and problems solvers in an often solitary environment.

Pass the mic. What other small business in town should everyone know about, and why?

Sara J. Handmade and JP General in Multnomah village. They are doing great work, and their businesses are amazing.

When someone visits your small business for the first time, the one thing they have to do, see, or try is _____.

Enjoy the journey. It’s a small, curated shop. It might look sparse, but there is so much to discover and lots of laughs and smiles to be had.

Portland Trail Blazers up for sale

Let’s address the trail-blazing elephant in the room. The Portland Trail Blazers are up for sale after existing under the ownership of the Paul Allen estate since 1988.

The sale is going through per a request in Allen’s will to sell the sports team “at some point.” It’s rightfully caused quite a bit of commotion — especially since Nike co-founder Phil Knight, a speculated prospect who expressed acquisition interest in 2022, is no longer looking to buy.

Naturally, we’re all a little nervous about the idea of getting the Seattle Sonics treatment. So, let’s go through some important points that will help you understand the headlines you’re sure to see over the next few months.

What do you get when you buy a team?

The purchase of a team is much like buying a business. The owner, depending on how ownership is split up, has control over player + coach contracts, franchise rights, the team’s brand, any existing broadcasting or sponsorship deals, and ownership of the sports stadium if the team has it (which the Blazers don’t).

How much are the Blazers worth?

The Blazers have the 23rd highest valuation out of the NBA’s 30 teams with an estimated ~$3.6 billion. If you’re curious, Paul Allen bought the Trail Blazers for $70 million in 1988 — quite the ROI.

However, Sportico is estimating that the team will sell for $4-5 billion once all is said and done.

If the team gets bought, will they move somewhere else?

Unfortunately, this isn’t a definite “no” right now. However, there are some factors working in favor of the Blazers staying here at home.

The potential NBA expansion
The NBA has already invested billions in adding two new teams (likely in Seattle and Las Vegas) to the league within the next couple of years. Relocating the Trail Blazers would likely cannibalize the money investors expect to make in the other cities. And why move when you’ve already got something that works?

A lot of local investment has gone into the team
We don’t just mean the emotional kind. There’s the active lease on the Moda Center that runs until 2030. There’s team infrastructure like the Blazers’ training facility. There’s the ties with our new WNBA team. Not that any of these would prevent a move on their own, but they’re all things that would make the decision surprising, should it happen.

Until then, we’ll just have to wait patiently to see how this plays out, which may take months. But if the Blazers hit the road, we’ll be right there with you with a box of tissues + a hug.

Vines worth the drive

Entry prices for Portland attractions: opening day vs. today

Family fun in the Portland area isn’t hard to come by, but many of our biggest attractions come with a price tag to match.

To see just how much costs have grown, we’re diving into local history to check out the first admission prices at five landmark attractions and comparing them to today’s costs.

Oregon Zoo

Founded as the Portland Zoo in 1888, this wildlife hub was once free. In 1959, it moved to its current location and greatly expanded its offerings.

After its 1959 move, the Oregon Zoo’s entry fees were 35 cents for adults and 20 cents for children.
Today, general admission is $26 for adults or $21 for children.

Oaks Amusement Park

Established in 1905, this amusement park was designed to be a destination for riders on the developing interurban transportation system. Over the years, it’s attracted thrill seekers by adding theme park rides to the mix.

In 1905, admission was 10 cents for adults and 5 cents for children
General admission is now $45 or $50, depending on the day, with lower prices for children under 4 ft.

Did you know? The historic carousel (that dates back to 1912) and train are free to ride, no bracelet required.

Portland Trail Blazers

This basketball team has been dunking in Rip City since 1970. The Blazers have watched fanfare grow since their early days — and ticket prices have climbed, too.

When the team debuted in 1970, tickets were $2-$4.
More recently, Rip City fans paid an average of $122-$333 for tickets, with in-demand courtside seats running as much as $3,000.

The Oregon Museum Foundation was founded in 1944 and would eventually become OMSI. In 1992, the museum moved to a larger space on Southeast Water Avenue — its current location.

In 1992, admission was $5.25 for adults, $3.50 for kids, and $4.25 for seniors.
Today, general admission is $20 for adults, $13 for kids, and $17 for seniors.

This men’s soccer team began as a North American Soccer League expansion club in 1975. In 2011, they played their first season as an MLS team.

In their inaugural MLS season, single-game tickets were generally $18-$35.

Did you know Portland got its name from a coin flip?

Gotcha. We’re here for the deep cuts, and there are plenty of interesting factoids to go around.

As connoisseurs of the quirky and unconventional, we put together a list of Portland’s history, oddest characteristics, and more. Maybe you’ve lived here your whole life and know some of this, or maybe you’ll learn something new.

Either way, these 18 interesting facts will have you winning “Jeopardy!” in no time.

Nature

Tanner Creek was once a waterway that flowed out of the West Hills and into the Willamette River at Couch Lake, where the Pearl District is now. As the city grew, the stream was rerouted underground into sewer pipes, and finally a separate line in 2006. It still flows beneath Providence Park, where sidewalk placards trace its path. Legend has it, some have even kayaked this subterranean flow.
Portland sits atop the massive Boring Volcanic Field — which was anything but in its heyday — and you can climb to the top of its three extinct cinder cones: Powell Butte, Mount Tabor, and Rocky Butte. The latter of this trio played host to the Multnomah County Jail from 1942-1983.
Whale, this one’s a bummer. In 1931, an orca became stuck in the Columbia Slough, causing quite the frenzy in the city. Crowds gathered to witness the spectacle, and locals gave it several names, like Ethelbert, Oswald, and Moby Mary. Eventually, two men killed the animal with harpoons (they were arrested), and afterward, it was displayed at various locations in a 400-gallon tank of formaldehyde. Following a lengthy legal battle and an exhumation, the body was ultimately reburied on a mountain north of Washougal.

Well, at least it was easier to dust the chandeliers.

History

Today, Swan Island is an industrial park at the base of the Skidmore Bluffs, but from 1927-1940, the peninsula served as Portland’s airport. Material that was dredged to expand the Willamette River’s main navigation channel was also used to build the 900-acre runway. It’s hard to imagine planes landing there now.
Council Crest Park, located at the highest point in the hills above Portland, was once the site of an amusement park referred to as the “Dreamland of the Northwest.” From Memorial Day in 1907 to Labor Day of 1929, the Portland Railway Light & Power Company operated the park to draw riders to its new Portland Heights streetcar line. Attractions included an observatory, a steam-powered miniature railway, a Ferris wheel, and a boat ride called “Trip Up the Columbia.”
In June of 1894, the Willamette River reached a high-water mark of 33.5 ft, covering 250 blocks during the worst flood in Portland’s history. Citizens erected elevated wooden walkways to get around and store owners sold their wares to customers in boats — from the second-story window.

Pop Culture

Bobbie the Wonder Dog, the real-life canine hero that inspired the Disney classic “Homeward Bound,” is buried in the Oregon Humane Society’s animal cemetery in Northeast Portland. Six months after disappearing on the Brazier family’s camping trip in Indiana, the two-year-old Scotch collie mix showed up on their doorstep — in Silverton, Oregon. He had traveled 2,800 miles in the dead of winter to get back.
Eh... what’s up, Doc? Mel Blanc, the voice of 400+ iconic cartoon characters, including Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Mister Magoo, and George Jetson, grew up in Portland. His first job as a radio performer was singing on KGW’s “Stories by Aunt Nell,” a weekly program for kids.

Sports

Did you know some of the biggest names in the game of women’s soccer played for the University of Portland Pilots? Christine Sinclair, Megan Rapinoe, Shannon MacMillan, and others certainly helped fly the program and sport to new heights, amassing a trophy case full of national championships and World Cup winners’ medals along the way.

Business

This list would be incomplete without revealing a certain truth — Portland is home to more strip clubs per capita than anywhere else in the country.
Corporate-lawyer-turned-artist Stephanie Pierce’s coin-operated art gallery was one of Portland’s premier tourist attractions from 1985 until 2013, when it closed shop. Behold: the 24 Hour Church of Elvis. At this street-facing window, visitors could input varying amounts of cash and receive a sermon — and even a legal marriage — from the King of Rock and Roll.

Food

Portland is well known for its vegan and vegetarian restaurants, but did you know that a key ingredient on many of their menus has been made here longer than anywhere else in the US? Ota Tofu is the country’s oldest tofu factory, started by Japanese immigrants in 1911. When the Ota family was forced to give up its business during World War II, a sympathetic landlord maintained the original location, and they were able to return following the conflict.
Before founding a grocery store empire, German immigrant Fred G. Meyer (originally Grubmeyer) bought a cafe close to Union Station — before ever setting eyes on it. Turns out, the foot traffic was poor, so he took his coffee and tea business door to door. He also began delivering groceries to logging camps around Portland in a small truck.
You can say “I do” at both of Voodoo Doughnut’s Portland locations (Old Town and Northeast Davis Street). Isn’t that sweet?

Architecture

The Great Light Way was a series of 15 arched light structures, constructed from 1914-1915 at every intersection along Third Street, from Yamhill Street to Glisan Street. Each 82-ft-long, 2.5-ton steel span contained ninety-six 40-watt bulbs, topped by a 750-watt nitrogen lamp. Business owners hoped the electrical spectacle would counteract the allure of Broadway and its burgeoning theater district, and for a short time, it shined bright.

Truly unusual

Reed College in Southeast Portland has the distinction of being the only liberal arts college in the world to posses a nuclear reactor. The “swimming pool reactor,” which sits at the bottom of a 25-ft-deep tank, produces neutrons that students and faculty use for research. Rubber duckies once floated on the water until federal inspectors mandated their removal.
A small windowless room inside the Oregon Health Authority building is filled with contaminated food items and other replicas that would make you sick. Enter, the International Outbreak Museum, a passion project and homage to Dr. William Keene, who investigated infectious diseases for the state. Hope you can stomach the 100+ exhibits.

Landmarks

The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry has gone through many iterations, from a collection of artifacts in City Hall to its original official home at 908 NE Hassalo St. The PNW’s first domed planetarium was constructed there in 1950, but alas, it was forced to relocate. Donated money and labor saw OMSI rise again on the edge of Washington Park, but it eventually outgrew its capacity. On October 24, 1992, it opened on the site of the former Station L power plant, and hasn’t moved since.

This Earth Day, make sure you don’t forget to shout out Earth for keeping us all grounded. Sorry, that pun was on a low-hanging branch.

Alright — all terra-ble jokes aside, Earth Day is on Tuesday, April 22 and many Portland organizations and community groups are hosting events that celebrate our local natural wonders and working to keep them nice and green.

Let’s dig into a few highlights.

Oregon Spring Cleanup | Saturday, April 12-Tuesday, April 22 | If flexibility is what you need to join the party, this statewide initiative is looking for volunteers throughout the week on projects like trash pick-ups (sometimes coupled with beer sipping), garden tending, and digging out pesky blackberry vines.

Picture-perfect views

Hoyt Arboretum to Pittock Mansion | 4000 SW Fairview Blvd., Portland

A winding descent will take you from the parking lot through land where 2,300 different trees and shrubs grow (including giant sequoias), before crossing West Burnside Road and making the final climb. Most people know the vista from Pittock Mansion is one of — if not the best — in town, but getting a good sweat going on the way to the viewpoint is much more rewarding than simply driving to the top.

Zig Zag Overlook | Timberline Lodge, 27500 E. Timberline Rd., Government Camp

Once the snow has melted during the summer and early fall, this trail takes you up and down several spurs of Mount Hood, offering a mind-boggling perspective on just how immense the peak really is. The final destination is a vantage point high above a colossal canyon. Celebrate your accomplishment back at Timberline’s Blue Ox Bar, a hole-in-the-wall featuring flatbread pizzas, craft beers, and glass mosaic murals.

Boardwalks installed into the side of this towering volcanic plug switch back and forth as you climb 600 ft, giving you a bird’s-eye view of the striking scenery. Fittingly, peregrine falcons call this geologic marvel their nesting grounds.

Lacamas Heritage Trail | NW Alexandra Ln., Camas

This trail’s proximity to the city also makes it a popular spot to jog and ride bikes while experiencing relaxing nature vibes. Move at your own pace along the narrow lake and branch off to several other area hikes, including Round Lake Loop and the Lacamas Creek Loop.

Wildlife walks

Warrior Rock Lighthouse Point | 38151 A&B NW Reeder Rd., Portland

Your destination is a historic lighthouse — the state’s shortest — built in 1930 to warn ships of a bedrock reef that juts out into the Columbia River. Some of Sauvie Island’s best birdwatching spots (keep an eye out for bald eagles and sandhill cranes) can also be found along this meandering but flat trail.

We make no promises you’ll see an owl, but it’s possible.

Cooper Mountain Nature Park, 18892 SW Kemmer Rd., Beaverton

Pick your path through this 230-acre reserve, where diverse environments ranging from prairie to oak woodlands and conifer forests attract plentiful wildlife. Make sure to stop at the listening devices that magnify local birdsongs for your ear.

Tom McCall Point | Rowena Crest Viewpoint, 6500 Historic Columbia River Hwy., Mosier

You’ll follow an old road to an intersection with another old road, thought to be a wagon route built in the 1870s, to reach this trailhead. Power through about 1,000 ft of elevation to enjoy mountain vistas and dynamic views of the Gorge, plus seasonal wildflower meadows. The trail is open May-October.

Catherine Creek Arch Loop | Catherine Creek Recreation Area, Old Hwy. 8, Lyle

From February to July, you can witness 90 different native species of wildflowers growing on the gentle slopes at the eastern end of the Gorge. Just be sure to time your visit for the blooms you hope to see.

With a hike as long as the Wildwood Trail, be sure to check for any trail closures and detours before you start.

The Wildwood Trail is the country’s longest soft-surface hiking trail within city limits. Pack plenty of food and water and set a steady pace of 3 miles per hour to complete the entire trail in a single day and obtain legendary local bragging rights. This route ends near the Washington Park MAX Station.

Powell Butte Nature Park | 16160 SE Powell Blvd., Portland

From atop this volcanic cinder cone, you’ll be greeted on clear days by the Cascades (Mount Hood, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Adams), diverse wildlife, and wildflowers in the spring. Parking at the visitor center can be difficult, even during the week, but there are various other park access points in surrounding neighborhoods.

Do go chasing waterfalls

You might lose track of the jaw-dropping waterfalls you see on this trail if it wasn’t so aptly named. You can actually walk behind three of them, which makes for some unforgettable, mist-in-the-face moments.

Niagara Falls | Niagara Falls Trailhead, Niagara Rd. Beaver

Just two hours outside of Portland, you’ll find the most famous Niagara Falls (this side of the Rockies) in the Siuslaw National Forest. You actually get a two-for-one deal on this outing: The trail first passes Pheasant Creek Falls, which drops from an overhang and crashes onto rocks where hikers can cool off on a warm day.

Little Zig Zag Falls | Little Zig Zag Falls Trailhead, 39 Road, Rhododendron

About halfway between Rhododendron and Government Camp, pull off of Highway 26 at the sign for “Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp” and follow the road to a parking lot beneath an exposed cliff face. A short, storybook walk transports you through a verdant forest to a roaring waterfall, where you can sit on a log and have lunch.

The Northwest Thurman Street Bridge Rehabilitation Project was completed in 2014.

Take it easy

Balch Canyon Loop | 2960 NW Upshur St., Portland

While there are many entrances to Forest Park, this one offers several memorable sights, including Oregon’s oldest intact bridge, the Witch’s Castle, and Portland’s tallest tree. At the end of the journey, you’ll descend 101 stairs painted like a rainbow — a great spot for a post-hike Instagram pic.

The cave was formed nearly 2000 years ago from lava streaming down the southern flank of Mount St. Helens.

Hikes with something a little extra

Ape Cave | Ape Cave Interpretive Site

Take a hike with a splash of spelunking in this lava tube (accessible May-October), named for the scout troop that first explored it — the St. Helens Apes. When open, facilities offer lantern rentals, as everybody is required to have two sources of light (phones don’t count).

Banks-Vernonia State Trail, six trailheads: Banks, Manning, Buxton, Tophill, Beaver Creek, and Vernonia

Explore Oregon’s first “rails-to-trails” park, which stretches through forested foothills and over gurgling creeks on wooden trestle bridges. You may have to share the trail with cyclists and horse riders.

The bridge perched 54 ft above the East Fork Lewis River in a wooded canyon is certainly screensaver worthy. After you make it back from your stroll, take a dip in the swimming hole below the arch — just be cautious not to float too far downstream.

Oak Island Nature Trail | Oak Island Trailhead, NW Oak Island Rd., Portland

Only open April 16-Sept. 30, this trail is visually stunning, with panoramas of West Sturgeon Lake, as well as educational. Signs with QR codes will teach you about biomimicry, or ways that nature has inspired human imitation and innovation.

Rejoice, Portlanders — the spring equinox is Tuesday, March 19, and with that, the promise of warmer days, blossoming landscapes, and yes (takes deep sigh) pollen. Personally, we think the weather is an underrated conversation topic, so we peeked at some of the major weather trends headed our way over the next few months.

Here’s what you can expect this spring in the City of Roses and beyond based on predictions from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center.

The forecasted La Niña appears to have finally arrived, causing cooler spring temps + more rainfall.

Temperature

Keep your favorite sweaters handy. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)’s Climate Prediction Center, we have a 33-40% chance of temperatures being lower than normal.

Precipitation

Rain jackets will also continue to be a must. Our region has a 40-50% chance of getting more precipitation than usual.

March comes in like a lion

Bad news: the average rainfall for this month is 3.68 inches, but the good news is that conditions should start to improve as we... ahem... march... toward drier days and peak cherry blossoms.

April showers us with allergens

Trees typically start to release more pollen around this time, meaning runny noses and red eyes. Start up that medicine regimen so you don’t miss out on the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival. Average overnight low temperatures hover around 44°, so it’s also time to start your garden.

May is moving the needle

We’ll always give this month its flowers. From the Portland Rose Festival to the Mt. Tabor Art Walk, there are plenty of outdoor events and for good reason; on average, we experience 276 hours — or 11.5 days — of sunshine.

The very first Portland Trail Blazers team

Portland Trail Blazers | Est. 1970

When Sports promoter Harry Glickman brought basketball to his hometown in Portland he fulfilled a decades-long dream. Seven years later, first-year Head Coach Jack Ramsay — known for his iconic plaid pants — took the Blazers to the promised land, roaring back from a two-game deficit to win the 1977 NBA Championship. Trail Blazers coaches, players, and fans come together under the banner of “Rip City,” a moniker spontaneously invented by legendary broadcaster Bill Schonely. On December 19, 2022, Damian Lillard passed Clyde Drexler to become the team’s all-time leading scorer.

Where they play: Moda Center

Initially, the Blazers played at Veterans Memorial Coliseum. They moved to the larger Rose Garden (now named the Moda Center) in 1995.
From 1977 to 1995, the city was gripped by Blazermania and the team set a record 814 consecutive home sellouts (the only sports franchise in the US to since surpass this mark is the Boston Red Sox).

Mascot: Blaze the Trail Cat

This silver-and-white mountain lion joined the squad in 2002.
For two years (1987-1989) Bigfoot was the Blazers’ on-court costumed character. Though he disappeared for decades, his descendant Douglas Fur recently took up the mantle, leaving behind the forest for the hardwood.

Team colors: Red, black, and white

Five lines on each side (representing opposing teams) come together to form the Trail Blazers pinwheel logo. Between 2004-2007, gray was added to the color palette.

Portland Timbers (MLS) | Est. 1975

Throughout their history, the Timbers have played in different leagues in various forms — the North American Soccer League, United Soccer League, and Major League Soccer, which it joined in 2011. Early on, its ravenous fans helped earn Portland the nickname “Soccer City USA.” For the most exciting game in club history, look no further than the “Double Post.”

Where they play: Providence Park

The ground has had many names throughout the years — from Multnomah Stadium to Jeld-Wen Field — and is one of the most-historic venues of any US soccer club.

Mascot: Timber Joey

For every goal and clean sheet (when the keeper doesn’t allow a score), Timber Joey cuts a slab from the Victory Log with a chainsaw and presents it to the deserving player.

Team colors: Ponderosa green, moss green, gold, and white

The double-sided ax logo is not only an homage to the Portland area’s logging industry, but it also serves as a stylized “T.”

Portland Thorns (NWSL) | Est. 2012

As a founding member of the National Women’s Soccer League, the Thorns went on to win the very first championship, defeating the Western New York Flash 2-0. Since then, the club has won a league record three titles, with the most recent success coming in 2022.

Where they play: Providence Park

The arena’s latest renovation was completed in 2019, adding three new levels, two new video boards, LED field lighting, an updated sound system, locker room upgrades, and more. Its current capacity is 25,218.

Team colors: Red, black, white, and green

Portland’s nickname as Rose City inspires many aspects of the club, from the floral logo to the actual roses that players receive when they score a goal (or prevent them from going in the net).
By Any Other Name (#BAON) is a team slogan and reference to the line “a rose by any other name would smell as sweet” in Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.”

Portland Winterhawks (WHL) | Est. 1950

The junior ice hockey team began its history as the Edmonton Oil Kings, before moving to Portland in 1976 for a cheaper stadium deal. Today, the team plays in the Western Hockey League (WHL), which is one of three leagues that comprise the Canadian Hockey League (CHL). Many alumni of the team have gone on to have successful careers in the National Hockey League (NHL), including Hall of Famers Mark Messier, Marian Hossa, and Cam Neely.

Where they play: Veterans Memorial Coliseum

The 12,000-seat arena opened in 1960 in honor of veterans from all wars.
Prior to the 2021-2022 season, the Winterhawks played games at both the VMC and the Moda Center.

Mascot: Tommy (formerly known as Tom A. Hawk)

The Winterhawks were often wrongly confused (and understandably so) as a farm team for the Chicago Blackhawks because their logos were so similar. But it simply stems from the fact that the owners of the two teams knew each other, and the jerseys that the very first Winterhawks team wore were a used set of Chicago jerseys.
In 2021, the Winterhawks partnered with local apparel company Portland Gear and designer Brian Gundell for a complete identity rebranding.

Team colors: Biscuit black, buzzer red, squall gray, celly gold, and ice white

The modernized logo incorporates several meaningful details. The two feathers are a nod to the previous logo. Mount Hood anchors the team in Portland, and within that design, you can see a “W” and an “H.”

The Rose City Rollers is actually a roller derby league that encompasses 17 different teams and programs, and claims to be the largest in the world. Its all-star team — the Wheels of Justice — competes on the international level and has won the world championship four times, more than any team except the Gotham Derby of New York City.

The crowd can feel the energy from the same level as the flat track.

Oregon State Beavers football | Est. 1893

This school first fielded a team when it was called the Oregon Agricultural College, winning the game 64-0. More than a century of unforgettable moments and rich football history followed. In the modern era, conference realignment and the dissolution of the PAC-12 makes their future murky, but leave it to the Beavers to stand firm against the flow. Will there always be support in the stands? Dam right.

Known as Parker Stadium until 1999, the naming rights were changed when Al and Pat Reser, of Beaverton-based Reser’s Fine Foods, made a seven-figure donation to the athletics department. A $161-million remodel was finished ahead of the 2023 season.

The Portland Trail Blazers offer trailblazing tech for blind fans

The Portland Trail Blazers are trailblazing with unique tech that enables fans who are blind and have low vision to follow the game.

Paralympic athlete and content creator Anthony Ferraro recently showed off tech from Seattle-based startup OneCourt. The haptic display board works by using tactile vibrations that let the user follow the ball across the court, while audio keeps them updated on the score.

How to get set up with a OneCourt device

Trail Blazer fans can pick up their OneCourt tablets at the Moda Center for free.

Despite the name, there’s nothing mid about this local chain known for smash burgers with crispy edges, or Beyond patties and fried chicken if you’re looking for a beef alternative.

A dedicated reader wrote in to tell us we missed the best “the best smashburger in the city,” so we followed up and indeed they look tasty. And at $10 for a double — or $12 for peanut butter and bacon — that’s a bargain we can get behind.

Carnivores and herbivores alike can find something to devour, with fillings ranging from smoky carnitas or carne asada to pescado (tender line-caught cod) and crispy roasted cauliflower.

You’d have to visit again and again to sample all of these restaurant’s tacos (you’ll definitely want to). To start that journey, here are some suggestions: El Choripapa comes with chorizo and potatoes, the Mole is braised in a signature poblano sauce, and the Barbacoa beef shoulder is tender and packed with flavor. Pro tip: Try the Barbacoa Jalisco Style — it’s crisped up on the grill.
