Winter weather is settling in here in the Portland area, weather we like it or not.

We couldn’t resist peeking at some of the major weather trends headed our way. Thanks to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center, we know what temperatures + precipitation trends to expect for December, January, and February

While exact weather conditions like snowfall typically can’t be predicted more than a week in advance, accurate seasonal outlooks can help us prepare for what winter will bring.

Here’s what to expect in our city:

🧣 Temperature

An average winter day is about 42°F in Portland, but the thermometer historically swings between 47-37°F. This winter, there is a 40-50% chance of lower-than-normal temperatures in the city. Brrr

🌨️ Precipitation

La Niña conditions are expected to persist in Portland through February for the second winter in a row, which means there’s a 33-40% chance that precipitation levels will be above average. But that’s nothing new, we got this.

December

Based on NOAA’s predictions, we may see more days below the low end of the spectrum — about 36°F

January

A “warmer” day in January is historically  around 48°F in Portland. But in 2022, we’re more likely to see that number drop to an average low of 36°F

February

Temperatures usually start to rise in Portland by February, with averages ranging anywhere from  37-52°F. This year, expect it to be closer to those lows

Fun fact – Portland’s snowiest New Year’s Day was in 2004, when 1.7 inches fell.
