Last week, the Portland City Council approved five new proposals presented by Mayor Ted Wheeler and Commissioner Dan Ryan to address humanitarian situations.
Resolution 927 says Portland will work with state and local partners to construct 20,000 new affordable housing units by 2033.
Resolution 928 has the city connecting with labor and community organizations plus minority chambers that have established workforce programs to evaluate the needs of local workers — prioritizing access to paid, non-standard work.
Resolution 929 says Portland will ban unsanctioned camping in the city within 18 months, with enforcement beginning in May 2023. Plans also include six sanctioned camping sites with health services for up to 250 people, ensuring all camps are accessible to people with disabilities.
Resolution 930 has the city focusing budget priorities on connecting people experiencing homelessness with sanitary, mental health, and other services.
Resolution 931 says Portland will create a diversion program that gives houseless individuals the chance to have low-level offenses wiped from their records if they participate in addiction or mental health treatments.
