News Notes
Environment
  • Portland General Electric will start construction on the country’s second-largest battery storage project later this year. The 400 MW installation will straddle two sites — one in North Portland and another in Troutdale — and will generate enough electricity to power ~260,000 homes for four hours. (The Columbian)
Sports
  • You can’t say Portland soccer isn’t exciting. Only a day after the Timbers won their first road game of the season, the Thorns’ keeper Bella Bixby equalized in the 97th minute to preserve the team’s unbeaten record — only the second time a goalie has scored in NWSL history.
Biz
  • James Beard Award-winning chef Naomi Pomeroy has been tapped to join the Quaintrelle restaurant group as a consultant. Pomeroy, who closed her restaurant and market Ripe Cooperative last year, will spend the summer coaching Quaintrelle employees and helping the restaurant incorporate produce from its partner farm, Abbey Road. Real Estate
  • With an asking price of $1.95 million, a floating property on the Willamette River in Sellwood is “the most expensive floating home to go on market” in Portland. The platform spans two moorages at the Oregon Yacht Club and features two homes with a combined 3,254 sqft of living space. (The Oregonian/Oregon Live)

“If you’ve ever wondered what the zoo would be like without the kids, ZooBrew is for you.”

Those words from Oregon Zoo director of events Mickey Webb are a little taste of what to expect at the annual beer-tasting festival returning Friday, June 9-Saturday, June 10.

You can sample suds from more than 40 breweries and cideries from across the Northwest, order meals from local food carts, enjoy live music and lawn games, and chat with zookeepers about their work.

ZooBrew tickets cost $55-$65 and the proceeds support the zoo’s species recovery programs and conservation education, as well as the needs of the special creatures in its care. Admission includes a souvenir glass and 10 tasting tickets.

The fun kicks off each day at 6:30 p.m. (or 5:30 p.m. for early-entry ticket holders).

From the editor
Multnomah County cat owners have a hiss-terical sense of humor. The Oregonian/Oregon Live recently went digging through 45,318 local cat registrations and found some treasures. From a-meow-zing names like “Furley Temple” and “Purrito Bandito” to some pawsitively ancient feline ages, the story is worth a read if you’re a fellow fan of felines.
