Where has all the Sriracha gone?
And to think we took this sight for granted last year. | Photo by Paul Narvaez via Wikimedia Commons
Last year, we heard word from Huy Fong Foods that a Sriracha shortage was on the horizon. Now, it seems we’re in for another Sriracha drought — quite literally.
Droughts in Mexico — where Huy Fong Foods sources its chilis — have affected supplies. In an interview with Food & Wine, the company recently revealed that the sauce shortage comes as a result of an “unexpected crop failure from the spring chili harvest.”
So what about those who crave capsaicin? (Think: the chemical that gives spicy food that burning sensation.) Unfortunately, there’s no end to the shortage in sight. And — since it doesn’t sell to stores directly — Huy Fong Foods can’t predict when products will return to shelves. But you could try your luck on a site like Amazon, where Forbes reported a pack of two 17-ounce bottles was recently listed for $94.99. We’ve also seen bottles listed for over $40 on eBay.
Our advice is to go local. Here are three locally made sauces we can’t get enough of:
Secret Aardvark Habanero is famous for its fan-favorite blend of Caribbean and Tex-Mex flavors, but also because celebs like Alexa Chung and Bob Saget tried it on Season 4 of “Hot Ones.” Saget’s exact words after learning where it’s made? “Portland, that’s a great place, I go there quite often.” Boom.
If you’re looking for something to smother on a bucket of wings, try Fire on the Mountain’s Buffalo Hot Sauce. You can order a bottle of the fiery condiment online, but we recommend picking it up in person since you’ll be able to add a jar of Raspberry Habanero to your order.

Weather
A heat advisory is in place from 10 a.m. today through 7 p.m. tomorrow for the greater Portland metro area. The National Weather Service predicts temperatures to reach the upper 90s, possibly surpassing the Fourth of July heat record of 97° set in 1972. (KOIN)
Eat
A farm-to-table bistro in Bethany Village recently celebrated its grand reopening. Bethany’s Table expanded to 3,500 sqft, adding a 10-seat, English pub-style bar and a private dining room. The Marketplace also now has its own dedicated space where customers can find grab-and-go food items and gifts.
Film
Peter Daulton is a retired filmmaker with projects like “Star Wars” on his resume. Now, the California resident is making his own films. His documentary about trolley parks is currently airing on PBS and may soon feature a segment on Oaks Amusement Park, which he visited last weekend. (The Oregonian/Oregon Live)
Happy Fourth of July, everyone. Whatever your plans are, I hope you have a wonderful — and safe — holiday. Remember that river currents are strong right now and water temperatures are still very cold, so please use caution and follow guidance from local officials on water safety.
