🍻 An apple a day...

Sip your way through Oregon Cider Week

Fun fact: Portlanders drink more cider per capita than anywhere else in the world. | Photo courtesy of Oregon Cider Week
Oregon Cider Week is back to shine a spotlight on the PNW’s vibrant cider scene — and quench the thirsts of hard cider fans across the region.

The fermented beverage with roots stretching back to ancient times takes center stage at 100+ events from Corvallis to Hood River, though most are happening in Portland — including CiderCon, “the world’s largest cider conference,” for the first time in nearly a decade.

Going on now through Sunday, Jan. 21, Oregon Cider Week events offer opportunities to learn from experts about the cidermaking art, sample chef-inspired pop-ups and pairings, buy packaged cider products to enjoy at home, and more.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away and fermented beverages are good for gut health... so, cheers.

  • We’re not out of the woods yet. An ice storm warning is in effect from 10 a.m. today until 4 a.m. tomorrow, with the National Weather Service forecasting “significant icing.” Officials say to prepare for additional power outages and tree damage and to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. (The Oregonian/Oregon Live)
Outdoors
  • Mt. Hood Skibowl is now open for the season. Fresh powder that fell over the weekend and during last week’s rare blizzard mean the slopes are shred-worthy for skiers and snowboarders. Lift tickets are available for both daytime and nighttime downhill and tubing fun. (KOIN)
Arts
  • Breathe in the steam, exhale the stress. Nordic Northwest’s new exhibit “Sauna is Life” explores the culture and history of the heat rooms in Finland, which are included on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List. Guests can appreciate the various photos and displays while waiting for breakfast at Broder Söder.
Eat
  • Craving cao lầu, a noodle dish from Vietnam’s Quảng Nam province? How about a pizza topped with huitlacoche, a fungal delicacy in Mexico? Specialty meals like these are hard to find outside of their countries of origin, but Portland’s diverse culinary scene is an exception. Treat your taste buds to a vacation. (Portland Monthly)
