A score worth fighting for

The VMT climate factor captures how many miles vehicles travel in a city on average each day. | Photo by Cambrie Juarez, PDXtoday
Streetlight released its 2024 US Transportation Climate Impact Index, which ranks the top 100 most populated metros across eight key climate impact factors. We’re breaking down the numbers + diving into Portland’s ranking.

Behind the methodology

Each of the eight climate factors — vehicle miles traveled (VMT), fuel economy, transit ridership, EV penetration (number of electric vehicles per 100 people), biking activity, pedestrian activity, truck miles traveled, and VMT change — were assigned a weight “based on their relative climate impact.” Utilizing the ranking results for each factor, cities were then given an overall ranking.

Learn more about how each climate factor was measured.

Key themes

  • Vehicle miles traveled — the largest contributor to a city’s emission levels — bounced back since taking a dip in 2020.
  • Biking sustained popularity, but pedestrian activity “dropped significantly.”
  • The number of electric vehicles per 100 people is still relatively low. However, Portland is considered the No. 7 city in the US for electric vehicles owned and available charging stations, with one charger for every 1,494 residents.
In addition to discovering key themes, the data can aid in identifying where improvements are needed and where current efforts are making an impact in each city.

Portland has a long list of climate and transportation initiatives. The city and the public transit agency, TriMet, are working to eliminate carbon emissions by 2050. TriMet has already implemented key steps, such as switching to renewable diesel and electricity. Last year, a progress report found the city had completed two of the 47 actions outlined in its Climate Emergency Workplan, with most of the remaining items on track for completion by the end of 2025. Progress continues at a slow but steady pace: Last month, Portland City Council voted to phase out the use of all gas-powered leaf blowers by 2028.

How we ranked

The City of Roses ranked No. 7 on the transportation climate index. Its key factor rankings are:
  • VMT: No. 8
  • Fuel economy: No. 18
  • Transit ridership: No. 9
  • EV penetration: No. 8
  • Biking activity: No. 6
  • Pedestrian activity: No. 44
  • Truck miles traveled: No. 20
  • VMT change: No. 35

This month, we ran a poetry contest to celebrate National Poetry Month. We challenged our readers to craft a poem using only the words that appeared in one of our newsletters (here are the original contest guidelines if you want to give it a try).

While prose is our newsletter’s bread and butter, it turns out that you all certainly aren’t op-prose-d to verse; we received several creative, intriguing, and beautiful poems that we narrowed down to our top five finalists.

Give them a read with the button below, then vote for your favorite and we’ll announce the winner next week.
  • “a newsletter” by Jessica N.
  • “If a Word Appears Once” by Sarah M.
  • “Silver Lining Spotlight” by Jenny C.
