Here’s how you can support free, unbiased local journalism in Portland

Our city editors smile up from a graphic that says "Support unbiased local media."
We’re dedicated to delivering you impactful, relevant, and positive local news. | Graphic by 6AM City
Hey there. It’s Ben and Cambrie, the local city editors you know and love. Allow us to pass the mic to 126 of our coworkers. (Yes, that’s right — an entire team is behind each day’s newsletter, and we couldn’t do it without them.)

We are 6AM City, the parent company of PDXtoday. We’re the people on a mission to engage communities by aggregating the most positive, impactful local news and events into a free, daily email newsletter. Maybe you caught the magic word in there — free. We’re proud that our product comes at no cost for subscribers, and we intend to keep it that way.

This week, we’re asking for support

We get hundreds of thank you emails every week, and we couldn’t be more grateful that we impact your lives. Several of you have asked how you can support us. We have a goal to raise $2,500 over the next 10 days, and we’re calling on you to join in.

You may have gotten something out of reading PDXtoday, like finding that life-changing concert in our Events section, or using our recommendations on the perfect way to spend the day with grandkids. If that was you, we’re calling on you now to support our mission.

A collage of photos of our staff out enjoying their cities.

We’ve got immense pride in our readership, our colleagues, and the cities we live in.

Stress-free morning news

Fun fact: We’ve turned down more than a million dollars in political ads since we first started — we’re that serious about our brand promise. In election years like 2024, advertisers move their money around, and those fluctuations impact businesses like ours who don’t accept political ad dollars.

This year, your contribution will go incredibly far to support our staff, back an unbiased approach to local and participatory journalism, and keep our product free for the whole community.

News Notes
Concert
  • Big name bands are bringing their shows to the Rose City this summer. Past standouts like Alanis Morissette, Blink-182, Hootie and the Blowfish, and superstars of today (think Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, and Noah Kahan) will make stops at venues including Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, Moda Center, and the Wonder Ballroom. (The Oregonian/Oregon Live)
Plan Ahead
  • What’s a Self-Love Soiree, you ask? It’s time to treat yourself (or the women in your life) to an uplifting evening of live music, inspirational speakers + healers, and handcrafted goods. It’s coming to The Old Church on Saturday, May 11; pre-sale tickets are $35 and the VIP treatment is $65.
Outdoors
  • Mother’s Day means birds and blooms at Silver Falls. The state park’s annual festival, Saturday, May 11-Sunday, May 12, will feature a wildflower show, native plant sale, guided bird watching and hikes, educational discovery tables, crafts, and live raptor presentations at 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. See the full schedule.
Eat
  • With a new location fresh out of the oven in Hillsboro, Ranch Pizza is set to open its eighth eatery in the Montavilla neighborhood this month. The popular purveyor of Sicilian-style pies will open at Southeast Stark Street and 79th Avenue, and like the business’s Beaverton outpost, will contain a Loro Coffee. (Portland Business Journal)
Travel
  • Riding Amtrak doesn’t always have to be a distant journey. Margaret Seiler took the train from downtown Portland to Oregon City for $4 round trip, and although such a day trip won’t make sense most of the time, it is a good reminder to slow down (and enjoy the snack bar). (Portland Monthly)
Sports
  • Some teams hang on to the final buzzer of Game 7, others crash out of the NBA playoffs in dramatically unimpressive fashion. Locked On Blazers host Mike Richman discusses how Rip City could benefit from those sour feelings in what’s expected to be a busy trade market.

Portland Art Museum receives grant to restore Claude Monet’s ‘Water Lilies’

Claude Monet's "Water Lilies," one of approximately 250 paintings created by the artist, now owned by Portland Art Museum. White blossoms occupy the upper half of the work, sprouting from round lily pads. On the bottom half, three pink flowers are framed by water grass.

Iconic painter Claude Monet created ~250 compositions of the water lilies in his garden in Giverny, France before he died in 1926. Out of all those works, one particular piece hung in the dining room of his son, Michel Monet, for over 35 years — eventually, in 1959, it made its way to the Portland Art Museum’s (PAM) Impressionist collection.

Since then, “Water Lilies” has lost a bit of its original magic, but thanks to a grant from the Bank of America Art Conservation Project, holistic conservation to restore the painting to its intended appearance — soft, subtle colors with varying texture and luminosity — can move forward. PAM conservator Charlotte Ameringer is leading the complicated effort to remove a synthetic varnish that saturates the paint films, imparting a flat surface gloss.

Typically, this type of work is conducted behind-the-scenes, but the community is invited to follow the process over the next eight months via social media.

Expect the painting to return to public view, alongside a transformed campus, in late 2025.

    From the editor
Cambrie and I visited Oregon City yesterday — admittedly, we did drive — but we still had a great time and a delicious lunch at Mesa Fresca Latin & American Kitchen. I would recommend the restaurant (and the housemade hot sauce) if you’re in the area.
