Frankly, this is delicious

Take a bite out of the Portland-style hot dog

We’ve got an important question about hot dogs for you. No, not whether they are sandwiches or not, but rather — why doesn’t Portland have its own signature frankfurter?

In the past, we asked our readers to do their wurst and help us come up with a culinary creation that would not only be unique, but also incorporate some of our city’s quintessential flavors.

With their suggestions and a bit of our own culinary creativity, we cooked up a recipe. So without further ado — we know you’ve got barbecues to get to — PDXtoday presents the Portland-style hot dog, aka “Keep Portland Wiener-ed.”

Ingredients

  • Franz hot dog bun
  • Otto’s Sausage Kitchen bratwurst
  • Kale
  • Caramelized onions + blackberries
  • Ore-Ida Crispy Gold Crowns
  • Goat cheese
  • Inglehoffer honey mustard

Directions

  • Add onions and marionberries to a pan and caramelize them. Feel free to add a bit of balsamic vinegar to boost the flavor.
  • Put potato bites in the oven, adding in buns toward the end to give them a nice toasting.
  • Fire up the grill and cook bratwurst to 165° internal temperature, with a nice char on the outside.
  • Chop and massage the kale, placing it inside the bun before adding the bratwurst. The heat of the dog will help soften the leaves even more.
  • Sprinkle goat cheese and Crispy Golden Crown potatoes on top, before adding heaps of the caramelized mixture.
  • Finish with a dash of honey mustard.

For many pet owners, Fourth of July is one of the worst days of the year. As much as we wish we could, there’s no way to explain the sound of explosions in the sky to them.

No one wants to think about the worst case — your furry friend getting out of the house — but it happens more frequently around this time.

The Oregon Humane Society has tips for keeping your animals safe during the festivities — including keeping their identification tags up to date and securing their environment.

Ensuring your pet is properly licensed is another safety net that can help provide peace of mind. If your pet ever does run away, whoever finds your animal can type in the license number to find your contact information online and reunite you quicker. Just make sure your pet is wearing its tag.

It remains to be seen if the Timbers are a good team, but there’s no doubt that watching midfielder Evander play is appointment television. The Brazilian who wears No. 20 was named to the 2024 MLS All-Star Game roster — a much-deserved honor.
