Experience art like never before at the ‘Beyond Van Gogh’ and ‘Beyond Monet’ immersive exhibits

When you look at a priceless painting, do you ever wonder what it would be like to be in the scene it depicts, surrounded by the creator’s brushstrokes and emotions?

Those who answered “yes” can experience something like it when two immersive art exhibitions collide next month in Portland.

See the works of Claude Monet, aka the father of impressionism painting, and post-impressionist master Vincent van Gogh when “Beyond Monet” and “Beyond Van Gogh” open at the Oregon Convention Center on Tuesday, Oct. 29.

Folks who attended “Beyond Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience” when it visited Portland in 2021 will already be familiar with the exhibit’s format; the difference this time is that guests can buy tickets to enjoy “Van Gogh” or “Monet” individually or both in the same day.

Freed from their frames

Visitors walk through large, open rooms where projections of the painters’ artworks cover the walls and floors. Original scores accompany you as you move through the spaces, taking in every detail of hundreds of famous works, including “The Starry Night” and “Poppies,” magnified many times over.

Inside a room at "Beyond Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience," two people share a bench while surrounded by scenes from "The Starry Night."

Only want to attend one of the exhibits, but not sure which to pick? You may recognize more of van Gogh’s works and enjoy that option best.

While you won’t see thick dabs of paint on canvas as you would standing next to the original paintings, the “Beyond” experiences put a unique spin on traditional trips to an art museum.

“Through cutting-edge technology, these immersive experiences are redefining what art means to people,” says Paquin Entertainment Group’s President of Exhibitions and Theatrical, Justin Paquin. “It has elevated artwork to the next level, allowing audiences to develop deeper connections with notable masterpieces that were just not possible in previous years.”

Tickets for “Beyond Monet” and “Beyond Van Gogh” go on sale Thursday, Sept. 19 at 9 a.m. There’s also an optional add-on virtual reality experience showcasing van Gogh’s personal letters to his brother.

  • A unique boat sails out of Portland today. The vessel, named the Golden Rule, was visiting the Rose City as part of a regional tour organized by Veterans for Peace. The Golden Rule earned the epithet the “world’s first peace boat” for its involvement in anti-nuclear-weapons protests during the 1950s. (KOIN)

  • Christmas… in September? Big box stores may get away with it, but holiday decorations spotted in downtown Portland this week had our inner Scrooges bah-humbugging — well, that was before we learned they were put there by a film crew working on the upcoming TV series, “Criminal,” starring Emilia Clarke + Charlie Hunnam. 🍎 How do you like them apples?

Green apples hang on tree limbs in the sun.

If you have fruit trees growing on your property, then you likely know the struggle of keeping up with the bounty as it ripens and falls to the ground.

Portland Cider Company wants to put your surplus or unwanted fruit to good use. Community members are invited to donate bushels of edible-quality apples and pears to be pressed into cider for the company’s annual Fruit Forward Drive.

The cider will be served in Portland Cider Company’s taprooms starting in late fall. 503 Distilling will also turn some of it into a special-edition brandy. A portion of proceeds from the cider and brandy will benefit Fighting Pretty, a local nonprofit working to help women fighting cancer feel strong and beautiful.

Bushels (a minimum of 40 pounds) can be dropped off at the cidery in Clackamas every Saturday in September, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Donors will receive vouchers for their donated fruit to redeem for cider when it’s ready.
