We take great pride in offering our weekly newsletter to you, our valued subscribers, for free — and we’re committed to keeping it that way. But we need your help. That’s why we’ve created a campaign to raise $500 over the next 10 days.

When you choose to support PDXtoday, you’re investing in more than just a weekly newsletter — you’re investing in a stronger, more informed community. Your contributions go directly toward creating more of the local stories you love, expanding our coverage, and ensuring we can remain a free resource for all.

If you’ve gotten something out of being subscribed to our newsletter, like finding that life-changing concert in our Events section, or planning a memorable family day with our City Guides — we’re calling on you now to help support our mission.

A few reminders about us:

We impact readers’ lives. We receive hundreds of thank you emails every week. If you’ve gotten something out of being subscribed to PDXtoday, we couldn’t be more honored to be part of your life.

We take a positive, unbiased approach to local reporting. While we’ll always let you know about decided-upon policies impacting our city, we skip the political discourse that can feel unending and draining. We believe reading about what’s going on in your city should be a positive experience.

The truth is, we love what we do. Sharing the most positive local news and events with our readers fuels us every day. If you’ve felt the love for our product too, help us today with a one-time contribution that supports local storytelling.

News Notes

Outdoors

The Bird Alliance of Oregon is soaring to new heights with a $6 million, 12.5-acre land purchase that will soon be used to nest a new wildlife care center. The project will eventually be able to treat ~6,000 animals a year, and construction should begin later this year. (Portland Business Journal)

Sports

The Portland Thorns have a new kit sponsor for the first time since the team’s inaugural season. Ring (yes, the doorbell company) will be taking over Providence’s spot on the front of the team’s jersey. They’ll also be installing Ring cameras throughout Providence Park. (KGW)

Feel Good

Can we get an “awwww” in the house? Newborn elephant calf Tula-Tu will be making her public debut at the Oregon Zoo tomorrow, Feb. 21. Locals who want to catch a glimpse of the little bundle of joy will be able to do so at the zoo’s Forest Hall between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. (KOIN)

Community

Metro recently announced that it will be dedicating $450,000 to 23 different placemaking projects across the city. Some of the funded initiatives include support for Ukrainian refugees, dance programs, food festivals, and a local-led musical.

Ranked

Uh oh, a new study has determined that Portland is way behind other West Coast cities in terms of its food scene (scoff). While Clarify Capital’s study, which used data like cuisine diversity + restaurant quality to make its distinctions, put Portland at No. 17 in the US, we were still behind most of the coast. (KOIN)

Portland Trailblazers coach Chauncey Billups only has 27 more games in his contract. Will the team replace him? If so, with who? Get the biggest stories every day from the local experts of the Trail Blazers with Locked On’s daily podcasts.

🎵 Don’t miss a beat

Hear that? It’s the scintillating sound of Portland’s live music venues beckoning you to a performance you’ll never forget. Put your hands in the air, wave ‘em like you just don’t care, then lay your eyes (and ears) on our guide.

Moda Center | Capacity: 3,000-20,500
When the biggest names come to town — think Elton John — they make a stop here. The venue can also be reconfigured to the Theater of the Clouds, which lowers the number of seats to no more than 6,500, creating an up-close experience.

Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall | Capacity: 2,776
Beneath the dazzling lights of the Portland sign, guests enter a three-level foyer and are immediately transported to a time long past. Restored Italian Rococo Revival architecture continues inside the theater, where the Oregon Symphony (the sixth oldest orchestra in the US) plays for dedicated crowds.

White Eagle Saloon | Capacity: 200
Though perhaps not the most iconic McMenamins concert venue in the city — we see you Crystal Ballroom — this ivy-adorned, allegedly haunted rock hotel is decked out in musical memorabilia and band photos. Order some Cajun tots and let the rhythm fill your soul.
The show must go on
