News Notes

Opening

The summer is off to a great start for fried chicken fans. The intensely popular Phillippines-based fast casual joint Jollibee opens its first Oregon restaurant tomorrow, May 30. Located inside Hillsboro’s Tanasbourne Village, the new location is one of just a handful to open in the PNW since 2023. (KGW)

Theater

The Oregon Shakespeare Festival released a line-up of 10 performances that will make up its 91st season in 2026. “Taming of the Shrew” and “Henry IV, Part One” are both on the docket, as well as other non-Shakespeare works like Lorraine Hansberry’s “A Raisin in the Sun” and Kate Hamill’s “Emma.” (The Oregonian)

Eat

While the Portland classic RingSide Steakhouse remains closed following an April fire, meat-lovers will be able to order frozen packages of some of the restaurant’s finer cuts for pick-up next month. Options include 16-, 20-, or 34-ounce ribeyes for $158-$196. (Portland Business Journal)

Oregonian

An Oregon man who recently went viral for setting sail for Hawaii with his cat Phoenix — with no previous open-ocean sailing experience — has arrived safely in Oahu. Oliver Widger previously quit his job in pursuit of his sailing dream with help from a YouTuber and his neighbor. (KGW)

Real Estate

Two of Portland’s iconic storybook-style homes are up for sale for under $2 million. One renovated 1924 Tudor Revival home was built by architect Roscoe Hemingway and includes his distinct attention to detailed finishes. The other mansion, built in 1927, is a contributing structure to the King’s Hill Historic District. (The Oregonian)

Feel Good

Some goats that were kid-napped from Orchards Feed Store have been safely brought baaaack to their home. The store owners said that the goats were spotted on the side of the road by someone and then were returned by Vancouver police. Whoever had stolen the goats had to cut through three deadbolts to take them. (KGW)

Whoa, whoa, whoa — five-star recruit Richard Wesley decommitted from the Oregon Ducks this week and the team lost a different four-star to BYU. What will they do now? Get the biggest stories every day from the local experts of the Oregon Ducks with Locked On’s daily podcasts.

The Wrap

I didn’t start Memorial Day weekend with many plans, but it ended up being one of my favorite weekends so far this year.

It started with waterfront ice cream with a friend on Thursday. Then a park picnic with a different friend on Sunday. And it all rounded out with a Monday zoo visit.

I hope your holiday weekend was just as fun.
