News Notes

Sports

The Portland Fire is back, baby. The city’s new WNBA franchise name was announced this week — alongside a logo of a flaming rose — and honors the former team that played in PDX 25 years ago. See how the fans reacted. (KGW)

The Word

Hot. That was likely the word on every Portlander’s mind yesterday, as temperatures crept up into the high 90s, even breaking 100º in some nearby areas. That’s not quite as hot as our record for July 16 — a whopping 104º in 1979 — but still quite toasty. (KGW)

Award

Portlanders Irene Taylor and Ian Karmel have earned nominations for this year’s Emmy Awards. Filmmaker Taylor received a nod for “I Am: Celine Dion” + writer Karmel was nominated for “Conan O’Brien: The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.” (The Oregonian)

Open

Kachka Fabrika — a new seafood-driven cocktail bar from the founders of Kachka — is now open at 2117 NE Oregon St., the former Aimsir Distilling tasting room. Diners can expect a range of sea-inspired bites and bevs, including six original martinis and imported + domestic caviar. (Eater Portland)

Pets

Listen up, cat lovers. CatVideoFest is coming to the Tomorrow Theater beginning Saturday, Aug. 16 with a top-notch compilation of feline shenanigans. But if you think your cat is a star, you can snag them some screen time by submitting a video. Get the details on how to submit.

Biz

In 1998, the most common job in our state was a retail salesperson, according to a recent study. Nowadays, the most common job is a fast food worker. That’s what we call taking care of business. (Visual Capitalist)
