Our monthly Plan Ahead is here to treat you with a curated lineup of Portland events in October. So, take out your calendar or text all your friends — these are our event recommendations heading into the month.
Saturday, Oct. 4
Celebrate local cider and beer makers for the revamped version of the former Hood River Hops Fest. In addition to beverages, you can also expect live music, food, and craft vendors.
Sunday, Oct. 12-Thursday, Oct. 16
Bartenders and cocktail enthusiasts from all over the world will descend upon Rose City for workshops, classes, tastings, tours, and plain ole boozy fun.
A portion of Northwest Cornell Road — between NW Westover Rd. and NW 53rd Ave. — will fully close for two weeks starting this Saturday to allow emergency repairs to a retaining wall and broken underground pipe. The project will include stabilization, repair, and repaving.
Closing
If no new buyer is found, Upright Brewing will close its doors at the end of this year. The brewery opened in 2009 and quickly gained popularity for its farmhouse beers. North Portland’s Upright Beer Station will remain open. (The New School)

Hot off an unbeaten streak of 18 games, the Portland Pilots are No. 1 in the men’s soccer coaches poll for the first time since the poll began in 1996. The team’s next home game is Friday, Oct. 10 against the San Diego Toreros — get tickets.
The Word
Mitomeiosis. That’s the process researchers at Oregon Health & Science University used to accomplish a groundbreaking task: turning human skin cells into fertilizable eggs. The process, which is still just a proof of concept, could be used someday to support families needing support to conceive. (Oregon Live)

Portland’s burn ban — which has been in place since June — is now lifted, meaning Portlanders can now use campfires + fire pits within city limits. See the full details. (KOIN 6)
Coming Soon
A new Lego store opens at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Bridgeport Village, marking the second Lego store in Oregon. Shoppers can expect interactive features like play tables and a mystery mural brick building activity at the ribbon cutting ceremony. (Oregon Live)
