The city of Portland is served by eight school districts: Portland Public Schools (PPS), David Douglas, and Parkrose, while Beaverton, Lake Oswego, Riverdale, Tigard-Tualatin, Centennial, and Reynolds support suburban students.

We’re giving you the 411 on enrollment, student-teacher ratio, tuition, and more (thanks to data from U.S. News & World Report) for the area’s major public and private schools. And don’t worry, there won’t be any homework.

Pssst — don’t let school traffic impact your plans. See the map below for a visual of where these Portland-area schools are located.

Before we dive in, here are four fast facts about schools in the City of Roses:
  • With 44,681 students enrolled across 81 schools, Portland Public Schools is one of the largest school districts in the Pacific Northwest. It was originally founded in 1851 and the city’s first teacher, John Outhouse, made $100 a month — that’s approx. $3,885 today.
  • Despite its size, PPS has the lowest student-to-teacher ratio at 17:1.
  • In the Parkrose School District, 100% of teachers are certified and 82.7% have three or more years of experience.
  • The graduation rate at David Douglas School District is 85.5% — more than 4% higher than the Oregon average.

🎮 Connecting esports to STEM careers

Despite serving kids across the state, Oregon Charter Academy (ORCA) offers approx. 40 student clubs, more than 200 yearly field trips, and career and technical education programs just like other tuition-free public schools.

For most of these opportunities, the control is in students’ hands — or the controller, in the case of ORCA’s esports club.

The club provides the chance for gamers to turn their hobby into a tech-based alternative to real sports, giving them a platform to develop communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking skills as a team. ORCA also offers related STEM courses on topics like video game design, software engineering, and coding.

Since its launch a year ago, the group has grown to 20+ members, including two students from Portland. As an affiliate with the Mountain West region of PlayVS, students practice and compete against other schools in titles like Rocket League and League of Legends.

When the Portland Children’s Museum closed in 2021, it left a sizable hole for parents and kids — a quarter of a million people visited each year.

Although a replacement has yet to materialize for the site, a collection of other projects are looking to fill that void for suburban residents. Enter: FLIP Museum in Beaverton, Columbia Play Project in Vancouver, and LEKA Playland in Tigard.
