The Fourth of July weekend in Portland starts tomorrow, with events to celebrate the United States’ 247 years as an independent country.

Here’s what to know:

  • Monday, July 3 | 91° | ☀️ | 1% chance of rain

News Notes
Development
  • The Willamette Falls Trust has announced a new development at Willamette Falls — separate from the Tumwata Village project. The tribal coalition plans to develop an island on the west side of the falls, ultimately creating space with mixed access for the general public and areas specifically for tribal members. (The Oregonian/Oregon Live)
Travel
  • A new hop-on, hop-off shuttle service eliminates the headache of parking at the Columbia River Gorge’s most popular destinations. The Waterfall Trolley travels from Corbett to Multnomah Falls, making several stops along the way — including Latourell Falls, Angel’s Rest, and Crown Point. Adult tickets are $29.
Drink
  • Starting tomorrow, 22 Portland bars will serve boozy, frozen, custom-made slushies — for $8 a pop. The Portland Mercury’s Summer of Slushies event runs the entire month of July, so you have plenty of time to try Ecliptic Brewing’s Mexican Mangonada or Bunk Bar’s POG Daiquiri before they melt.
Eat
  • Here’s a second scoop of sweet summer deliciousness. Salt & Straw Ice Cream launches its Berries Berries Berries Series today. The seasonal menu includes three fan favorites (City Editor Cambrie loves the Birthday Cake & Blackberries) and two new flavors made with GoNanas — a woman-owned, vegan, gluten-free, and allergen-friendly banana bread company.
Environment
  • This evening marks the end of legal summer chinook fishing on the Columbia River between the Astoria-Megler Bridge and Priest Rapids Dam. Oregon and Washington officials made the decision based on lower-than-expected numbers of adult chinook recorded crossing Bonneville Dam. Sportfishing remains open on the Willamette River. (The Oregonian/Oregon Live)
Festival
  • Clinton Street Theater is winding up for its inaugural Hanabi Japanese Film Festival. In Japan, hanabi festivals in late summer feature fireworks displays and food. Here in Portland, the event — running for two weeks starting Monday, July 24 — will showcase Japanese films ranging from cult classics to lesser-known modern flicks. (Portland Mercury)
Ranked
  • No matter how you slice it, Ken’s Artisan Pizza is one of the best pizzerias — period. Italy’s Top 50 Pizza organization named the Kerns neighborhood restaurant No. 3 in the country, praising the quality and seasonality of its ingredients. Portland’s Apizza Scholls (No. 20) and Nostrana (No. 29) also made the cut. (Top 50 Pizza)

All community members are welcome to stop by and enjoy multicultural music and dance performances, as well as live karaoke.

  • “Be Your Own Superhero” art activities involving building capes, shields, and helmets

Sunday, July 9

  • Scavenger hunt with opportunities to learn about Black historical figures and win prizes

From the editor
A fellow equestrian is preparing for the show of a lifetime. Newberg trainer Caeli Cavanagh and her Icelandic horse Þeyr will fly to the Netherlands to represent Team USA in the breed-specific World Championships. Icelandic horses (the breed of the Vikings) are unique in that they have extra gaits compared to standard horses — and this pair will compete in each gait class. A GoFundMe campaign is helping fund Cavanagh and Þeyr’s trip.
