Help the Bird Alliance of Oregon save baby animals
Don’t be alarmed if you see a fawn curled up by itself — mom is probably just out foraging. | Photo by Cambrie Juarez, PDXtoday
For most of us, summer is a season for sunshine and relaxation. For animal rescue services, it’s also baby season.
Between February and October — but especially in the spring and summer — you’re much more likely to come across baby animals that appear sick, injured, or abandoned. Our advice: trust the pros.
Meet the Bird Alliance of Oregon’s Wildlife Care Center
Never guess when it comes to animal care. Visit the care center’s “Found a Wild Animal?” page, then call (503) 292-0304 or another licensed rehabilitator and leave a detailed message. But before you do…
Assess the situation
Many animals brought into wildlife rehabilitation centers aren’t actually abandoned. An animal displaying no indicators of distress or injury may just be waiting for its mom. If the animal is bleeding or obviously injured, it’s time to get the experts involved.
Be mindful of the animal’s well-being
Don’t act immediately when you’ve determined an animal is abandoned. Human contact stresses the animal and could lead to injury and disease (to you and the animal). Human food or improper feeding techniques can also cause harm. Keep a close eye, be patient, and consult the Bird Alliance of Oregon’s Wildlife Rescue Tips.
At this point, you’re in good hands. Follow their instructions to safely bring in the animal, and go cash in on your good deed for the day. Mother Nature thanks you.

Watching the U.S. Women’s National Team’s quest for a World Cup three-peat from your own couch is fine — but you’ll get so many more post-goal high fives if you catch the match in Portland’s “Living Room.”
On Friday, July 21, The Sports Bra and Portland Community Football Club (PCFC) are teaming up to host a watch party at Pioneer Courthouse Square for the USWNT’s first game Down Under.
Pregame family-friendly festivities kick off at 12 p.m., offering food and drink from local businesses like MattaPDX, Mama Dut, and HeyDay. Flicks on the Bricks will show “Bend It Like Beckham” on the big screen at 2 p.m. Finally, the main event will start at 6 p.m., when the Red, White, and Blue take on Vietnam in what will be the Asian nation’s first-ever World Cup appearance.
The event is free to attend, but all merchandise and bar sales will benefit PCFC.
Somehow, I made it back from Puerto Vallarta without any flight delays, but other summer travelers are not so lucky. As of yesterday morning, 34 inbound trips to Portland International Airport had been delayed, with two canceled, reflecting a worrying trend across the country. If you are heading out this holiday weekend, officials are warning to expect more of the same.
