Date night ideas for every type of Portlander

Kids, this is the story of how I met your mother, and it was all thanks to PDXtoday.

Okay, so maybe that’s not exactly how the 2000s sitcom went, but if Ted Mosby had consulted us for date night ideas, we could’ve shaved the show down to two seasons (and saved his kids a lot of time). Regardless — whether you’ve met “the one” or are hoping to impress someone new, we’ve got 25+ local date night ideas that are legen — wait for it — dary.

For the ones who want a night out on the town

  • Live it up at the longest-running drag cabaret on the West Coast, Darcelle XV Showplace, founded by the late Walter Cole.
  • Descend into the Jack London Revue — a small hideaway jazz club that hosts world-class musicians.

If the way to their heart is through their stomach

  • Does your significant other love bagels? Could they eat pasta for breakfast, lunch, and dinner? Learn to make their favorite food by taking a class at Cookshop.
  • Pedal your way around Portland’s craft beer scene with a BrewCycle ride.
  • Get cozy and sip a glass of wine in a candlelit nook at M Bar.
A low table stands on a blanket in the grass with round, yellow pouffe pillows to sit on and table decor.

Pop-up picnics at Abbey Road Farm in Carlton start at $239.

If you’re really hoping that it works out

  • You and your date won’t want to jump ship after spending time together on the river. Book a sailing adventure or rent a kayak, Jet Ski, pontoon boat, and more through GetMyBoat.
  • Book a two-hour luxury pop-up picnic at Abbey Road Farm. It includes wine, a basket full of goodies, and Pinterest-worthy seating in a picturesque setting.

News Notes
Civic
  • Fire Station 23 is fully operational. The Portland Fire and Rescue facility serves the Hosford-Abernathy and Brooklyn neighborhoods. Budget cuts led to its closure in 2011; it partially reopened in 2017 with a two-person rescue unit. But thanks to federal funding, Station 23 now has a four-person fire engine.
Sports
  • Mia Brahe-Pederson is the first high school track and field athlete to sign a name, image, and likeness deal with Nike. The soon-to-be-senior at Lake Oswego High School holds the state records in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Her best 200-meter time is second in American history to Olympian Allyson Felix. (DyeStat + The Oregonian/Oregon Live)
Closing
  • Camas-based Grains of Wrath Brewing will close its Portland location Sunday, July 9. Despite winning the Medium Size Brewery of the Year title at the 2023 Oregon Beer Awards, the company said closing the brewery and taphouse on North Williams Avenue will help it focus on “operational efficiency and stable growth.” (The New School)
Travel
  • Need a last-minute coastal getaway? RV and tent campers can now make same-day online reservations for the 17 Oregon State Parks campgrounds along the coast. Online reservations previously had to be made 24+ hours in advance. Free limited Wi-Fi will also be available to make reservations at parks’ on-site registration booths.
Listen
  • Do you hear that? It’s the sound of music floating on the summer breeze. At 5 p.m. every Wednesday through August, Portland’5 holds free outdoor concerts on the brick street between the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall and Antoinette Hatfield Hall. The street is closed to traffic for Music on Main performances.
Number
  • 70. That’s how many years 99W Drive-In Theater in Newberg will celebrate next month. The drive-in theater — one of just a few left in Oregon — is owned by the grandson of original founder, J.T. Francis. Blockbusters like “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” are currently showing. (OPB)
Shop
  • If you’re looking to buy a new pair of sunglasses this summer, you’re in luck. Our online store (Six & Main) has you covered with a variety of polarized, floating sunglasses… that’s right they float in the water. Find your perfect pair now.

🚒 To Ukraine, with love

Lake Oswego will donate a retired fire engine to Ukraine

Lake Oswego will soon send a big, red present to Ukraine.

Within the next couple of weeks, the city’s fire department will donate its retired 1994 fire engine to the nonprofit Ukrainian Resistance Foundation. The truck will travel to the East Coast, then on to Germany. It will eventually reach Ukraine by passing through Poland.

The engine will help fill the besieged country’s critical need for emergency, medical, and fire equipment. The city of Lake Oswego said the donation “supports the Ukrainian community during a time of great need.”

Messages of hope and encouragement will travel with the truck. The Lake Oswego Fire Department asked people to write uplifting notes on the engine at a send-off event on the Fourth of July.

The fire department’s recently purchased replacement — Engine 210 — can hold 500 gallons of water, is equipped with more than 2,500 ft of hose, and can pump up to 1,500 gallons of water per minute.

From the editor
We’ve been talking about trips to the coast a lot lately — and here’s another reason to journey west. Knappton Cove Heritage Center (on the Washington side of the Astoria-Megler Bridge) will host living history reenactments this weekend. Learn about Lewis and Clark’s expedition and life during the early 1800s by watching costumed actors demonstrate various tasks, like using flintlock firearms, camp cooking, making leather clothing and canoe paddles, and more.
