The outdoors are for everybody — and there are plenty of hikes in our area that are friendly to wheelchairs, strollers, and other mobility aids. Get some fresh air on three of our favorite accessible trails.

🌊 Lacamas Heritage Trail | NW Alexandra Lane, Camas
Soak in the relaxing nature vibes along the narrow lake and branch off to several other area hikes, including Round Lake Loop and the Lacamas Creek Loop.

🌲 Hoyt Arboretum Overlook Trail | 4000 SW Fairview Blvd., Portland
Head from the visitor center parking lot to this paved, mile-long trail which affords gorgeous views of Portland’s West Hills.

🏔️ Powell Butte Nature Park | 16160 SE Powell Blvd., Portland
From atop this volcanic cinder cone, you’ll be greeted on clear days by the Cascades (Mount Hood, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Adams), diverse wildlife, and wildflowers in the spring. Be aware: the terrain varies between pavement and compact and loose soil. Some areas can be steep, so expect a workout or recruit some help.

News Notes
Health
  • In the previous four months, seven patients at OHSU have successfully received liver transplants thanks to a new “liver in a box” device. The perfusion machine pumps blood through the organ at body temperature, extending the preservation window up to 24 hours. (Portland Tribune)
Arts
  • A new mural that honors Portland’s vibrant music scene will be dedicated Friday, Sept. 1, at 2 p.m. The painting, created in a graphic novel style by the Pander brothers, serves as a backdrop for TriMet’s turnaround at 1130 SW Morrison St. (Portland Tribune)
Real Estate
  • Designer... or dud? The Portland region saw several breathtaking homes hit the market over the past year, from a remodeled mid-century modern perched in the Southwest Hills to a lovely Pearl District loft. See how these 10 listings fared. (Portland Monthly)
Tech
  • Recent support from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is a boost for Portland startup MyRadar, which is planning to send its own network of small satellites into orbit to better detect wildfire threats. This will help streamline the gathering of information and notifying users on the company’s weather app. (Portland Inno)
Closed
  • Laurelwood Brewing Co. will live on, just not in pub form. The outfit that’s one of Portland’s longest-operating beer producers has closed its last remaining location on Northeast Sandy Boulevard. Fans can still purchase its beers on tap at various bars/restaurants and find cans in stores. (Willamette Week)
Weather
  • Look up. Tonight’s full moon is not only the second one this month (aka a blue moon), it’s also the last blue supermoon we’ll see until 2032, appearing 8% bigger and 16% brighter than usual. Check local charts for the best time to view. Bonus: shop for telescopes. (NPR)
Active
  • Celebrate Labor Day a few days early with Blade & Timber Axe Throwing — they’re serving up beers, cheers + bullseyes for the long weekend. Bonus: Take 20% off all reservations made today through this Friday, Sept. 1.*
Finance
  • Refinance rates are skyrocketing. But home equity rates remain relatively low — which means that now is a great time to borrow against your home. Calculate your payment.*

The Wrap

From the editor
I’m sure I’m not the only one whose Labor Day Weekend plans are up in the air because of wildfires. But it looks like the approach of meteorological fall will bring some much needed cool temperatures and precipitation to the region, so hopefully that will clear out the smoke.
