🎨 Introducing 2024’s color of the year

Pantone Color of the Year aesthetics in Portland

The color experts from the Pantone Color Institute have spoken. Peach Fuzz — aka PANTONE 13-1023 — is the 2024 Color of the Year.

The company said it chose Peach Fuzz, a hue that lands somewhere between pink and orange, because of its warm radiance and modern elegance, and because it “captures our desire to nurture ourselves and others.”

We think we can all agree, it does give us that warm, fuzzy feeling inside.

With Peach Fuzz on the brain, we decided to put together a deck of Portland aesthetics that embody the Color of the Year — from stunning skyline pics to local businesses.

Every December, Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, and her team select a hue to rule them all — from her converted RV garage office in the desert, we might add.

Pantone, a New Jersey-based company known for its universal color language for designers and manufacturers, has been picking a Color of the Year since 1999. To find the shade, the research team scours the world for new color influences. It pulls inspiration from fashion runways, new kid’s animation movies and art museums — to name a few — and considers socio-economic conditions.

Fun fact: The first color to be chosen was Cerulean Blue.

News Notes
Weather
  • What’s cold, blue, and holding a frozen microphone? KOIN’s Kohr Harlan, who braved Mount Hood’s first blizzard since 2012 to bring us the report from Government Camp. For those on the valley floor who woke up to a dusting yesterday, more snow could be on the way with this weekend’s arctic blast. (KOIN)
Biz
  • Von Ebert Brewing’s expansion has entered its next phase; the beer maker will take over Ecliptic Brewing’s North Portland production facility and taproom. In recent years, success on the award circuit has pushed demand for the boar-adorned beers to the limit. Now, annual capacity could potentially increase fivefold to about 20,000 barrels. (The Oregonian/Oregon Live)
Community
  • Since Gov. Tina Kotek and the Legislature approved an unprecedented housing and homelessness package last year, Multnomah County and Portland have met — and exceeded — their goals. Officials say the city and county have added 140 shelter beds, housed 191 individuals or families, and provided eviction protection for another 1,474 households. (The Oregonian/Oregon Live)
Transit
  • Gateway Transit Center will close for six weeks starting this Sunday. Fixed-route and shuttle buses will stop at the station, but MAX Red Line will be completely suspended until Monday, Feb. 26 — the Green and Blue lines will also see disruptions. (Portland Tribune)
Closing
  • Two shops known for selling sweets are facing a bitter pill to swallow. Bee’s Custom Cakes & Cafe on Northeast Sandy Boulevard and Holler Treats in Sellwood have both announced they will close. You have until Jan. 14 and 21, respectively, to visit these locations.
Coming Soon
  • A new 16,600-sqft event space, dubbed “The Midtown,” is moving into the Union Bank building’s ground floor. Art of Catering will debut its new downtown Portland venue, which can split into two rentable options — the Oregon and California rooms — on Thursday, Jan. 18. (Portland Business Journal)
Plan Ahead
  • We wants it, yes, the precious. Excuse our friend Gollum, he’s just excited about J.R.R. Tolkien’s birthday celebration, coming to McMenamins Kennedy School on Saturday, Jan. 20. Fans of “The Lord of the Rings” can enjoy a marathon of the director’s cut movies, plus live music, a costume contest, and more.
Real Estate
  • Speaking of the Shire. There’s a $1 million Salem listing on the market, complete with a 4,645-sqft residence... and a 1,000-sqft Hobbit house, decorated in the coziest Middle Earth style. The ADU is an existing Airbnb property (called “Bag Inn”) that brings in $154–289 a night. (Portland Monthly)

✨ Dazzling designs for Darcelle XV Plaza

Darcelle XV Plaza will bring a sparkle to downtown Portland

The proposed designs for Darcelle XV Plaza are in a word, dazzling. The planned public space and memorial to Portland’s iconic drag queen will feature an off-leash dog park, a “walk of fame” dedicated to LGBTQ+ activists, an outdoor stage covered by sail shades, and perhaps most notably, a sparkling chandelier.

Once known as O’Bryant Square, the block at the intersection of Southwest Park Avenue and Harvey Milk Street was condemned in 2018 for the structural failure of the site’s underground parking garage.

Now, the aim is to make the half-acre park a safe place for everyone. When it reopens (no timeline is set), Downtown Portland Clean & Safe will be tasked with security and organizing events.

You’re invited to share feedback at the public open house in February (the exact date and time are TBD).
