News Notes
Edu
  • School is canceled today across Portland Public Schools following yesterday evening’s freezing rain. Officials cited ongoing power outages, risk of tree damage, and hazardous roads as reasons for the closure, which also leaves the district with few options to make up instruction days lost during November’s teachers’ strike. (The Oregonian/Oregon Live)
Community
  • When wind chill dropped temperatures below 10° on Monday, Multnomah County’s warming shelters set a new record — 1,181 people spent the night in 12 emergency shelters. The effort represented a collaboration between the state of Oregon and local nonprofits; hotel rooms were also booked for 30 families experiencing homelessness. (The Oregonian/Oregon Live)
Outdoors
  • Mt. Tabor Park was one of Portland’s hardest-hit places during last weekend’s winds. Many large fir trees atop the city’s extinct volcano fell over, destroying a picnic shelter and other infrastructure like handrails in the process. (Willamette Week)

  • Don’t let snow/ice/rain keep you from a delicious meal at these all-weather food cart pods. You’ll find heaters, roofs, fire pits, and of course some of Portland’s best bites. We could really go for a beer at Prost! and Matt’s BBQ right about now... (Eater Portland)
Weather
  • If you’re looking for a silver lining from the recent storms it’s that the snowfall will add to the Cascades’ lagging snowpack and Portland’s (and Oregon’s) water supply — but just how much remains to be seen. Despite current conditions, a warmer, drier winter is still expected due to El Niño. (OPB)

🌊 Seaweed, it’s what’s for dinner

Ride the regenerative seafood wave with Winter Waters

Ready to reel in some regenerative seafood? Next month, chefs and tastemakers across Oregon will spotlight farmed sea vegetables and other local sustainable seafood items during the second annual Winter Waters series.

In Portland, sample specially brewed seaweed beers at Loyal Legion or try a six-course tasting menu at Morchella.

Beyond the Rose City, follow the smell of salty sea air and venture even closer to the source to enjoy additional events along the Oregon Coast.

In 2023, Winter Waters restaurants brought in more than $60,000 in revenue — a boon during the typically slow month of February. The campaign’s nonprofit partner, the Oregon Kelp Alliance, also received $6,000.

From the editor
The McBee household is on day five without internet thanks to the ongoing Xfinity outage, but I’m only complaining a little because we’re one of the lucky ones who still have power. In related news, I finished a 1,000 piece puzzle all by myself.
