With the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments just around the corner, we’re joining the fun of bracket competitions with a face-off of our own — the PDXtoday pizza bracket.
Last year, you helped us name the best brewery, Ecliptic Brewing. This year, we asked you to share your favorite pizza shops in Portland. Now — thanks to you and the help of a random generator — we have the official lineup for our bracket.
Who’s in the running
Going head-to-head in the first round are:
Scottie’s Pizza Parlor and Apizza Scholls | Scottie’s slings round and square pies made with naturally-leavened dough, while Apizza Scholls’ neo-Neapolitan crusts and simple ingredients regularly land it on awards lists.
Ranch and East Glisan Pizza Lounge | Ranch’s Sicilian-style slices can be enjoyed at six shops in the metro area; you’ll have no trouble finding East Glisan at its cozy neighborhood corner.
Escape From New York Pizza and Pizzeria Stellina | Self-proclaimed as “Portland’s first by-the-slice shop,” Escape From New York has also been “ranch free since ’83.” Pizzeria Stellina’s gourmet approach incorporates surprising ingredients like pears or rosemary potatoes.
Boxcar Pizza and Ruse Brewing Crust Collective | Vegan Detroit-style pizzas are Boxcar’s forte; Ruse Brewing Crust Collective rewards your trip over the river to Vancouver with a variety of enticing recipes.
How it works
Beginning today, we will host several voting rounds within our newsletters and social channels to determine Portland’s best pizza. Who moves on is up to you. Vote for your favorites, and the pizza shop with more votes moves on. Simple as that. We’ll go until we have a champion, which will be announced in our Friday, March 29 newsletter. You will be able to voteonce per round.
How to participate
Vote for the pizza shop you’d like to see advance to round two using the button below. You can vote for all four spots or as little as one. Once we count all the votes, we’ll share an updated bracket and new poll in an upcoming newsletter.

Festival
A giant silver unicorn that brings cheap beer and killer music? No, you’re not dreaming — Project Pabst has announced it will return to South Portland seven years after the summer music festival’s last concert. The lineup goes live today at 10 a.m. (The Oregonian/Oregon Live)
Feel Good
And see even better, thanks to OHSU’s mobile eye clinic. The Casey Community Outreach Program started in 2010, but thanks to $3 million in donations, it’s expanding with a second van to better reach people in underserved communities. So far, 10,000 patients have received care, with 6,000 getting free prescription glasses. (KGW)
Coming Soon
Shoppers, on your marks, get set... New Seasons Market will open its Milwaukie location on Wednesday, March 27 with a bread-breaking ceremony at 10 a.m. (there will also be a llama and alpaca, food samples, a live DJ, and more). The store at 10830 SE Oak St. will create 100+ jobs. (Portland Business Journal)
Real Estate
Clean white lines and warm wood elements make this Argay Terrace midcentury ranch house a time capsule with a modern touch. Developers had plenty of room to work with in 1963 — the lot is just over 10,000 sqft — and that means plenty of space to entertain, from the basement bar to the cozy fireplace nook. 🌷 Tulip time is ticking closer
Plan your trip to the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival

In the City of Roses, it’s obvious what our favorite flower is, but just 40 minutes south of Portland, a different bloom enjoys its time in the spotlight (if not always the sunlight).
That’s right, the annual Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival returns for its 40th year from March 22 to May 5, inviting visitors to roam 40 colorful acres and more than 1 million flowers (that’s 100+ varieties, too).
But before you depart for this Dutch-inspired dreamland, here are some things to know.
Admission is per person and includes parking, but is only available online. Entry is permitted during the chosen time, but there is no limit on how long you can stay.
Peak bloom is predicted for the first two weeks of April, but stay tuned for more current updates.
Prepared Hero’s Emergency Fire Blanket, a highly-rated staple to have on hand in your kitchen or yard. It’s easier to use than common fire extinguishers + leaves no mess behind, too.
I plan on using this week’s dry-but-cold spell to do some early yard work ahead of spring. There are weeds that need pulling and plants that need trimming, but things are already starting to bloom.
