We only have one planet, and the same can be said about our fair city of Portland. April is Earth Month, and although every day is the right time to make a positive impact, the celebration is an excuse to give our home some special TLC.

If you’re looking for outdoorsy volunteer work, here are some places you can pitch in.

Bird Alliance of Oregon
Flock together with fellow admirers of our feathered friends; volunteer positions are available at all levels of the organization to help achieve its mission “to inspire all people to love and protect birds.”

Neighborhood stewards also rehabilitate wildlife habitats.

Natural Areas Volunteer Stewardship
Volunteers of all ages are invited to enhance and restore places like Oaks Bottom and Leach Botanical Garden.

The Intertwine
This coalition has its eyes on the bigger picture, nurturing the Portland-Vancouver region’s network of parks, trails, and natural areas.

Urban Forestry
Graduates from the Neighborhood Tree Steward program commit to 40 hours of “planting trees, organizing, advocating, and greening” their local community.

Trust us, pulling ivy off of trees is even more satisfying than you think.

No Ivy League
Help keep habitats healthy for native plants by removing invasive ivy in places like Marquam Nature Park and elsewhere in Forest Park.

Columbia Slough Watershed Council
Join the paddling team or cleanup crew, or educate the next generation of environmental heroes at this waterway that was brought back from the brink through hard work and dedication.

News Notes

Health
  • Dr. Steve Wallace successfully completed the Pacific Northwest’s first osseointegration surgery — a groundbreaking procedure that inserts a titanium implant directly into the patient’s bone for mounting a prosthesis — at Legacy Emanuel. Compared with traditional socket mounts, patients reportedly benefit from decreased pain and the ability to feel the ground beneath them. (KGW)
Community
Closed
  • Blossoming Lotus, one of Portland’s longest-tenured vegan spots, has folded for good. Fans flocked to show their love and say goodbye, causing the restaurant to run out of food (and close) a day earlier than planned. The juice bar of the same name (but different menu and owners) remains open. (The Oregonian/Oregon Live)
Kids
  • The Portland Finnish school will host Mimmit music group at Nordic Northwest on Sunday, April 28. The family-friendly concert will feature songs in English and Finnish from the band’s two sisters, who have performed together for 15 years. Tickets range from $5 to $15 and doors open at 1 p.m.
Stat
  • According to a report from Coworking Mag, 23.3% of the Portland metro area workforce is remote — the fifth highest in the western US region. The analysis looked at 1,303,541 total workers ages 16 and up; millennials (PDXtoday included) made up the bulk of that work-from-home figure at 40%. (Coworking Mag)
Sports
  • Mariners fans are sure to have some thoughts following a mediocre first week of the season — Ty Dane Gonzalez and Colby Patnode, the hosts of Locked On Mariners, certainly do. Hear them break down the first two series.
    Wellness
    • Having an experienced therapist like Josh Wilson on hand can help Portlanders improve their communication, resolve conflicts, and improve their family dynamics. Josh specializes in family + couples therapy and has experience working with different relationship types (think: ethical non-monogamy). Book a session or a free 15-minute consultation today.*

We’re just over a month out from Portland Sunday Parkways, but we can already feel (and hear?) the excitement.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation announced this summer it will partner with Boom Bike PDX, a pedal-powered mobile soundstage that can carry up to 500 pounds of cargo to bring live music to the people.

On May 19 in East Portland, June 16 in Northeast Cully, and Sept. 22 in Southwest Portland, event organizers will transform stretches of the neighborhoods into car-free zones, inviting the community to get outside and ride (or walk) and engage with fellow residents and local businesses.

SoundsTruck NW and Make Music Day PDX will also be set up at parks along the routes.

Interested volunteers and vendors are invited to apply now.
