Order up: your guide to Portland’s coffee shops

We’re on the verge of summer here in Portland, which means iced coffee season is just around the corner. Make sure you know how it differs from cold brewthe jitters might give it away — and check out these cafes when you need to beat the heat.

Water Avenue Coffee, various locations | What goes well with iced coffee? Sunshine and outdoor seating. You’ll find all three delights here (actually, no promises on the weather).

Barista, various locations | The coffee choices stay cool thanks to a rotating selection; just ask your barista for the current offerings and their tasting notes.

Courier Coffee, 923 SW Oak St. | Does the thought of no caffeine send a shiver down your spine? That never happens when you’re sipping at this charming, record-spinning neighborhood cafe.

A row of iced drinks, coffees and teas, sits on a table. Three are brown or light tan colored, while three are purple, red, and green. They were made at Upper Left Roasters.

Some of Upper Left’s iced drinks are tea or lemonade based.

Upper Left Roasters, 1204 SE Clay St. | Come for the calming, airy vibes, stay for the chilled and sometimes colorful lattes.

The Great North Coffee, various locations | Keep it simple with a cold brew or go for something fancy like the Cardigan, which adds housemade star anise simple syrup and milk.
Why stop at 5 cups?

      From the editor
I was deeply saddened by the recent passing of Bill Walton. I’ll never forget when he made an appearance in my class at the University of Oregon or how he made every college basketball game more entertaining with his commentary. Throw it down one time!

Everyone has stories about this radiant champion, but the best stories were the ones he told. I’ll certainly miss him.
