• The Portland Pickles have made history as the first sports team in the country to legally sell cannabis-based products at live sports events. • Six of Portland’s seven public outdoor pools open today, June 20. Admission for a day of swimming is $4-$5, or you can buy 20-visit passes or season-long access. The city of Portland’s splash pads and interactive fountains are also on for the summer.

• Ready to bring home a furever friend? Multnomah County Animal Services is offering reduced adoption rates for the month of June. Dogs and puppies cost $25, cats and kittens are $15, and “pocket pets” like guinea pigs, rabbits, and hamsters are $5.

• A new nonstop flight will connect Portland and New Orleans starting next January. Flights can be booked now through Alaska Airlines with travel dates running through the spring of 2025 (FYI, Mardi Gras is Tuesday, March 4). It’s Alaska Airlines’ 55th nonstop destination from PDX. (KGW)

• Angel’s Rest Trail reopens today, just over a week after a trail runner encountered a cougar, prompting its closure. The cougar “attempted to take a swipe at the runner with its paw” along the popular hiking route just east of Portland in the Columbia River Gorge; the person escaped unscathed. (KGW)

• It’s almost Herman the Sturgeon’s birthday — in concept if not reality, anyway. The Bonneville Hatchery’s unofficial mascot turns 90 on Saturday, June 22, but the octogenarian currently swimming at the hatchery’s Sturgeon Viewing and Interpretive Center isn’t the original Herman. • Julie Derrick, owner of JD’s Shoe Repair, is moving her cobblers shop to Baker City. After 15 years, she’ll shutter the local business in July, but she still plans to do pick-ups and drop-offs in Portland to keep in contact with her existing customer base and their specialized footwear needs.
