Debunking myths about esketamine

Fact or Fiction: Debunking myths about esketamine

Esketamine, aka Spravato, is a game-changing medication that can help adults with treatment-resistant depression.

As with all new and innovative treatments, questions may arise. We’ve brought in the experts from Active Path Mental Health to debunk some myths associated with this nasal spray medication.

Fact or Fiction: Esketamine is the same thing as ketamine.

This is somewhat fiction. While ketamine is an intravenous treatment that may be used off-label to treat depression, esketamine is one of the active ingredients of ketamine prepared as an FDA-approved nasal spray for the treatment of depression. It’s considered an augmentation treatment, meaning that it’s used in conjunction with an oral antidepressant.

Fact or Fiction: It can improve quality of life.

This is fact. Integrating Spravato into a treatment plan can help make life easier. The reason: Alleviating symptoms, like anhedonia (the lack of interest or pleasure in doing things), may help encourage patients to engage in the parts of life that bring them joy.

Fact or Fiction: Esketamine isn’t approved by the FDA.

This is fiction. Spravato is FDA-approved and covered by most insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, while ketamine isn’t typically covered by insurance.

Fact or Fiction: It’s difficult to take.

This is fiction. Keeping up with taking pills daily is sometimes challenging. As a nasal spray, esketamine is easy to use under clinical supervision. It’s administered twice weekly for the first four weeks of treatment. After that, the frequency is lowered to once weekly and potentially reduced further over time depending on an individual’s personalized treatment plan.

Active Path Mental Health is on hand to help Portlanders who might benefit from adding Spravato to their wellness toolbox. Connect with their team to see if this treatment is right for you.

News Notes
Today Is
  • The summer solstice, when the Earth’s North Pole is at its maximum tilt toward the sun, resulting in the longest day and shortest night of the year. Even more good news? Oregon will start the season drought-free for the first time in years. (Space.com + KGW)
Sports
  • The Portland Pickles have made history as the first sports team in the country to legally sell cannabis-based products at live sports events. The local baseball team will offer Cycling Frog’s nonalcoholic seltzers containing 2 MG of THC derived from hemp grown in Central Oregon to fans 21+ at Walker Stadium. (KGW)

Pets
  • Ready to bring home a furever friend? Multnomah County Animal Services is offering reduced adoption rates for the month of June. Dogs and puppies cost $25, cats and kittens are $15, and “pocket pets” like guinea pigs, rabbits, and hamsters are $5.
Travel
  • A new nonstop flight will connect Portland and New Orleans starting next January. Flights can be booked now through Alaska Airlines with travel dates running through the spring of 2025 (FYI, Mardi Gras is Tuesday, March 4). It’s Alaska Airlines’ 55th nonstop destination from PDX. (KGW)
Outdoors
  • Angel’s Rest Trail reopens today, just over a week after a trail runner encountered a cougar, prompting its closure. The cougar “attempted to take a swipe at the runner with its paw” along the popular hiking route just east of Portland in the Columbia River Gorge; the person escaped unscathed. (KGW)
Keep Portland Weird
  • It’s almost Herman the Sturgeon’s birthday — in concept if not reality, anyway. The Bonneville Hatchery’s unofficial mascot turns 90 on Saturday, June 22, but the octogenarian currently swimming at the hatchery’s Sturgeon Viewing and Interpretive Center isn’t the original Herman. Wish him a happy birthday anyway. (KOIN)
Closing
  • Julie Derrick, owner of JD’s Shoe Repair, is moving her cobblers shop to Baker City. After 15 years, she’ll shutter the local business in July, but she still plans to do pick-ups and drop-offs in Portland to keep in contact with her existing customer base and their specialized footwear needs. Sports
  • Traveling to Michigan, or hosting Ohio State — which is a tougher game for Oregon to win? Locked On Ducks looks ahead to next season’s highly anticipated Big 10 matchups.

Long live the season of outdoor dining. Just southwest of Portland and its many alfresco eating options lies the town of McMinnville where one of the best main streets in America is hosting a summer-long open-air dining series.

MacFresco! will transform McMinnville’s Third Street into a car-free culinary wonderland every weekend starting Friday, June 21 through Sunday, Sept. 1. The event, previously known as Dine(Outside), got its start during the pandemic as a way to safely serve guests and quickly became a popular highlight in McMinnville’s summer schedule.

This year, MacFresco! has expanded to include 41+ participating businesses, from restaurants and ice cream shops to art galleries and boutiques. Sip wines at Willamette Valley Vineyards’ tasting room, quench your thirst with gluten-free beers at Bierly Brewing, savor the flavors of Latin America at Pura Vida Cocina, and more.

Make your visit a full weekend adventure with our wine country road trip itinerary.

What would be your top priority when purchasing an electric car?

Angled parking spaces with EV chargers outside of a downtown high-rise building featuring a glass pavilion.

Need a charge? If PGE’s Electric Avenue charging station is full, there are more chargers in the garage at 56 SW Taylor St.

When considering an electric vehicle purchase, our readers have a definitive priority: how far it can go on a single charge. Reliability was a distant second and comfortability was a mere afterthought.

International Picnic Day came and went earlier this week, but every nice summer day is a good excuse to spread out a blanket and dine alfresco if you ask me. Have you ever hired a local “luxury picnic” business? Let me know who you recommend so I can shout them out in a future newsletter.
