Pack up: People are moving to Portland from these US cities

A view from high up looking south shows Portland along the Willamette River, with freeways and bridges dominating the center of the frame.

Welcome home, fellow Portlanders.

U-Haul — the moving truck company that started in Ridgefield, WA — has released its 2024 mid-year report on migration trends, tracking the origins of U-Haul trucks arriving in the 25 most populated cities in the US, including Portland. Let’s take a look at who’s moved into our city from where — and if you’re new around here, we’ve got even more to share.
So, where are folks coming from? According to U-Haul, here are the top three metropolitan areas outside our state that people are moving to Portland from:
  • Seattle, WA (oh hey, SEAtoday)
  • Los Angeles, CA
  • Phoenix, AZ
Welcome to Oregon, friends. But that’s not all — our fellow Oregonians are also moving around quite a bit. Here are the top three cities within the Beaver State that U-Haul customers are arriving to Portland from:
  • Eugene
  • Salem
  • Bend

Home sweet home

News Notes
Today Is
  • Labor Day — an annual federal holiday, first designated in 1894, that honors the contributions of workers in America. Take part in local celebrations, including Labor Day Brunch (think eggs benedict + mimosa specials) at The Eastburn Public House and a family-friendly group bike ride starting at Abernethy Elementary School.
Sports
  • Portland is close to getting a WNBA expansion team, according to a report by Sean Highkin of the Rose Garden Project. The WNBA and the Bhathal family, which bought the Portland Thorns earlier this year and will reportedly lead the ownership group, are expected to make an official announcement Sept. 10. (The Rose Garden Report + KGW)
Civic
  • Portland City Council passed the city’s first housing production strategy — a list of 35 actions to implement over the next six years to address housing needs, particularly for low-income households, communities of color, and people experiencing houselessness. Roughly half of the identified tasks have already been completed or started. (KOIN)
Transit
  • In the Portland area, double-decker buses are novelties reserved for small businesses like Rachel and Rose and Tov Coffee, but that could soon change. The Interstate Bridge Replacement project team has budgeted for eight, zero-emission double-decker buses operated by Clark County transit agency C-TRAN. (KGW)
Arts
  • The Time-Based Art Festival is, in Portland Monthly’s words, “an impressively elastic container for — anything, really.” Spread across three September weekends, the event opens on a musical note Thursday, Sept. 5 with the neurodiverse artists of Videotones in front of the Pacific Northwest College of Arts. (Portland Monthly)
Seasonal
  • A mild winter is in store for most of Oregon — but the Portland area is an exception. The 2025 Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts colder-than-normal temperatures, with the chilliest days falling in January and early March. Portlanders can expect above-average rain and snowfall, too. Soak up the sun while it’s here, folks. (The Oregonian/Oregon Live)
Home
  • Cooler weather is approaching — time to replace drafty windows with beautiful, energy-efficient Renewal by Andersen® windows. For a limited time, enjoy 20% off your entire order.*
