News Notes

Real Estate

The iconic U.S. Bancorp Tower — or, the “Big Pink” — was sold this week to Jeff Swickard, an automotive industry leader. The sale price was not disclosed, but the building will remain managed by Seattle-based Unico Properties. (KGW 8)

Transit

Portland’s oldest TriMet MAX train officially retired on Tuesday after 39 years in business. The train, which traveled about 2.2 million miles over the course of its lifetime, has been donated to the Oregon Electric Railway Museum for preservation. (Portland Tribune)

Closing

Gresham craft store Knitted Wit will close next month after nearly two decades in business. Customers will be able to shop at a discount through Saturday, Aug. 16, and the store’s weekly “Crafternoon” and “Second Sunday School” events will continue until then. (The Oregonian)

Feel Good

The Oregon Zoo has some new residents: California condor chicks. Nine of the critically endangered birds were hatched in the zoo’s Jonsson Center for Wildlife, with two more eggs sent to hatch in Boise, Idaho. After about a year and eight months, the chicks will be released into the wild.

City Guide

❤️ Seal your date

A pizza rests on a small, mosaic-style table set for two people beneath a covered outdoor patio. Bunches of grapes dangle from vines overhead, along with an eclectic array of string lights and lantersn.
Sure, sharing food can be romantic — but you’ll want a whole pizza to yourself when you visit The Turning Peel. | Photo by Cambrie Juarez, PDXtoday
Kids, this is the story of how I met your mother, and it was all thanks to PDXtoday.

OK, so maybe that’s not exactly how the 2000s sitcom went, but if Ted Mosby had consulted us for date night ideas, we could’ve shaved the show down to two seasons (and saved his kids a lot of time). Regardless — whether you’ve met “the one” or are hoping to impress someone new, we’ve got 45+ local date night ideas that are legen — wait for it — dary.

If the way to their heart is through their stomach

Bond over sourdough pizzas and scratch-made limeade under the lantern-lit, grape-vine-covered patio at The Turning Peel.

If you love the great outdoors

Quote Shakespeare while strolling through fragrant blooms at the International Rose Test Garden or Peninsula Park Rose Garden.

For the ones who like to play games (just not with your heart)

Bring your appetite and a board game to Mox Boarding House. You can also borrow a game from the restaurant’s library, or buy a brand-new one from the shop attached to the restaurant.
More dates await

The Wrap

Portland International Airport travelers left their shoes on through the TSA checkpoint for the first time in nearly 20 years this week.

The nationwide change aims to streamline TSA ahead of major events like the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Summer Olympics. You should still probably arrive two hours early, though.
