🫖 Here’s the tea — it’s Drink Up Week

Two hands clink their glasses containing red- and peach-colored liquids. One glass features a city skyline and the name "Portland," while the other reads "PDXtoday."

Drink Up Week is finally here and we have a feeling it’ll be the toast of the town.

Here’s the tea — today through Friday, July 26, we’re celebrating the entrepreneurs, mixologists, venues, and beverages that make Portland go ‘round.

As you know, we’ve created an interactive map of can’t-miss deals offered by local businesses in the Rose City. Here are the top deals our PDXtoday editors have their eyes on — and what they plan to pair with these drinks.

A map of Portland has icons representing beverages across the city.

Drink deals here, drink deals there.

City Editor Ben has eyes for the Smoked Serrano Michelada beer cocktail at Stormbreaker Brewing in St. Johns. That kind of spice goes well with the summer heat we’ve been having — and the Portland Pyre Pile burger, loaded with pimento cheese and mojo sauce. If you’re making a night of it, might as well stick around and throw some axes.

As someone with a notorious penchant for sampling whatever her friends and family order in her presence, City Editor Cambrie will be taking advantage of the “Fill a Tray” deal at The Brew in Gladstone. You get four 16-ounce coffees or smoothies for $15 — so you can treat your loved ones (and they pay a small fee of granting you a sip).

We hope you enjoy sipping your way through our city this week. Cheers to you and happy Drink Up Week, Portlanders.

News Notes

Tech
  • Portland felt the ripples of a global software crash that crippled Microsoft Windows systems on Friday. Dozens of flights were grounded at Portland International Airport, local hospitals scrambled to restore access to critical records, and the city’s emergency communications were disrupted, prompting Mayor Wheeler to declare a state of emergency. (KGW)
Sports
  • The Portland Thorns promoted interim head coach Rob Gale to the permanent position after he led the team to six back-to-back wins (a league record for the start of any head coach’s career). Gale served as the assistant coach under Mike Norris, who was reassigned as the club’s technical director in April. (KGW)
Watch
  • We peeked behind the curtain at Portland International Airport’s new main terminal opening next month. Some of the biggest wow factors? The 72 live trees recreating a “walk in the park,” a pre-security mezzanine + stadium seating, and a wall of screens showing clips of Oregon landscapes synchronized with the weather.
Plan Ahead
  • Literary Arts announced three author events coming this fall. News anchor Connie Chung will discuss her memoir on Sept. 25, Malcolm Gladwell will share his book “Revenge of the Tipping Point” on Oct. 15, and author/journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates will talk about his nonfiction book “The Message” on Oct. 22.
Open
  • Portland-based Green Drop Garage has expanded into Vancouver. The certified B Corp business provides car care from routine maintenance to repairs while upholding environmentally friendly practices like using enzyme-based cleaners and re-refined motor oil. Find the new location at 3800 Main St.
Real Estate
  • Storybook charm, English gardens, stained glass, and views of Mount Hood. Those are a handful of whimsical attributes waiting to woo potential buyers at 394 SW Edgecliff Rd. The 3,051-sqft home built in 1930 is a gardener’s dream, with a greenhouse and fruit trees on nearly two park-like acres.
Ranked
  • James Beard Award-winning Haitian restaurant Kann is one of the top 45 Black-owned restaurants in the country, according to Ebony Magazine’s annual Eats 45 list. Kann was the only Oregon location to earn the distinction. (KGW + Ebony Magazine)
Listen
  • TrailBlazers.com reporter Casey Holdahl joined Locked On Blazers after observing the team’s Summer League performance in Las Vegas. Listen to his insights and predictions concerning the upcoming season.
Outdoors
  • Explore the Columbia River Gorge and learn about Sasquatch on Portland Spirit’s Bigfoot Adventure Cruise. This 3.5-hour jetboat trip features narration by Cliff Barackman (star of Animal Planet‘s “Finding Bigfoot”). Grab tickets to experience this summer adventure, offered daily July through September (except Tuesdays) at 9 a.m.*
Finance
  • Did you know you could finance your fixer-upper with home equity? You could get up to $50K with a HELOC — calculate your payment.*
Wellness
  • Don’t let summer heat drain you. Native Hydrate electrolyte drink mix contains all nine essential amino acids, keeping you optimally hydrated and full of energy.*

Would you eat dinner with a group of strangers?

Six people sit around a long wooden table set with colorful dishes of avocados, salads, and tomatoes. Hand reach across the table to pass dishes around.

Pull up a chair and savor a hearty serving of togetherness with some new friends.

PDXtoday readers are bucking science. Despite living in a city that isn’t known for its extroversion, 69% of poll respondents said they would definitely dine with people they had never met before — just 5% said the concept was a hard pass for them. Portland, your social butterfly garden is blooming.

From the editor
Thank you to those who reached out with questions about the airport’s new main terminal. Mark M. wanted to know if carpet merchandise will be available for purchase. While PDX won’t be selling any directly, some airport retailers have offered memorabilia in the past — with several new shops opening next month (like Portland Gear and Hello From Portland), there’s a good chance you’ll find some.
