It’s hard to imagine Portland without the blooming cherry blossoms + skyline views of Tom McCall Waterfront Park, but the mile-long strip along the Willamette River was once the site of the city’s first freeway.

A free documentary, “The Forgotten Story of Harbor Drive: Portland’s Demolished Freeway,” goes in depth into how historic buildings were leveled to war-like ruins in 1941 to construct the original byway, and how it was eventually turned into the 36 acres of green space we enjoy today.
