Few things scream “summertime” more than the crack of a wooden bat, the smell of sizzling hot dogs + the sight of a baseball diamond on a warm evening. Portland is still waiting on its own Major League Baseball franchise, but there are plenty of smaller local teams to support — like the Hillsboro Hops or the Portland Pickles.

The latter plays in a wooden-bat summer collegiate league and has a mascot you may already be familiar with. Dillon T. Pickle has a farm-to-fame origin story + many adventures (and misadventures) to his name, like his Oscar-worthy reenactment of a viral Portland interview, or the time he fell victim to suspected porch piracy and lived to tell the tale.

We recently went to a home game, clapped eyes on the mythical pickle + relished all the small-town vibes. If you’ve never been to a Pickles game but are curious, we’re sharing some firsthand tips and resources to help you enjoy America’s pastime, Portland style.

🚌 How to get there

Walker Stadium is nestled in Lents Park at 4727 SE 92nd Ave. Its nearness to I-205 makes it easily accessible for folks visiting from farther away, while two public transit options make it a breeze for locals. The 17 bus line drops off visitors at the park’s northeast entrance on Southeast 92nd Avenue, or you can take the MAX green line to the Southeast Holgate Boulevard station a couple of blocks away.

🎟️ Admission + specials

The Pickles play 30+ home games throughout the season, and spectators have the option to buy single game tickets or season passes. A $12 ticket will get you a seat on the grass — just be sure to bring a blanket or a folding chair. The team runs special promotions for some home games, like “Woof Wednesday” when fans can bring their canine pals, and iconic guests are often invited to throw the first pitch.

🌭 Food, drinks + entertainment

Hot dogs, snacks, and suds served in baseball-bat-shaped drinking vessels are all available for purchase inside the stadium, along with merch to help you rep the team outside the park. As for laughs — those are free, and there are plenty to go ‘round. The announcers’ quips + perfectly-timed sound effects will have you rolling in the peanut shells scattered among the bleachers.

🥨 After the game

Regretting the decision to not buy a hot dog at the game? Try our Portland-style weiner recipe, or walk 10 minutes to Zoiglhaus Brewing Company for a German bratwurst or pretzel. Did you go to a game + fall in love with the Pickles? Show some next-level support by becoming a host family for a player.
