Picture a Portland of the past

This photo from 1898 shows a very different city than the one we know

A black and white photo shows Portland in 1898, with farmland in the foreground and sternwheelers on the river

There are many buildings that we do not recognize.

Feast your eyes on what downtown Portland + the West Hills looked like in 1898.

This black-and-white photo shows a city none of us alive today are familiar with: from the largely untouched eastern bank of the Willamette River to the buildings that sit at water level on the other side. Sternwheelers are docked at what was then known as Willamette Iron Works and the empty hillside wouldn’t be home to the Pittock Mansion for another 16 years.

Who else wants to jump into the photo and wander the West Hills without worrying about trespassing on private property?
