Time is running out on a grace period to renew expired licenses + vehicle registrations in Oregon.
The Oregon DMV closed its field offices for several months in 2020 due to the pandemic, which resulted in a huge backlog of paperwork that employees have been tackling ever since. To ease the pressure, state lawmakers put multiple rolling grace periods in place throughout the year.
Under one such moratorium, law enforcement officials have been ignoring expired driver licenses, permits, vehicle registrations, and disabled parking placards — as long as they didn’t expire more than six months ago. The grace period ends on Dec. 31.
Last month, the DMV started sending letters to roughly 300,000 Oregonians with expired tags to urge them to renew before the end of the year. There won’t be a second reminder.
Now that DMV offices have reopened + it’s easier to get an appointment, the state has no plans to grant any new grace periods. Oregon has also added more online options to help you avoid a trip to the actual DMV.
It’s worth checking the DMV website first to see if you can get your renewal service done online, or to find out what you’ll need to take to an in-person visit. Office appointments can be made online ahead of time, but walk-ins are also accepted. You can check the wait estimates here.
