When the weather outside is frightful , nothing hits the spot quite like winter beers. Though there are no hard and fast rules that connect these brews — oftentimes they’re stronger + darker — you’ll usually know them when you sip them. Cheers to all the Portland breweries that are here to pour you a tall glass of cold-weather comfort.

🍺 Deschutes Brewery | Jubelale

210 NW 11th Ave.

With notes of spice, toasted cocoa + toffee, this is a quintessential seasonal release, whether you enjoy it at the taproom or pick it up at the store. Jubelale was the first beer bottled by Deschutes and has been made every year since 1988 . Although the recipe hasn’t changed much, the brewery has annually partnered with PNW artists to create a fresh label since the early 1990s.

Evoking a Christmas tree adorned with citrus garlands, this fragrant festive ale deftly blends fruit + hops to please the palate. They say smell is strongly connected to memory and this drink is fitting of yuletide tradition. Enjoy it with family and friends at the new Moon Room .

🍺 Cascade Brewing | Glueh Kriek

939 SE Belmont St.

As one of the earliest products of Cascade Brewing, this fan-favorite certainly warms the soul. Served hot on draft at the Barrel House, this sour beer is crafted with Oregon-grown Bing and Montmorency cherries — ideal for those particularly chilly days. Plus, if apple cider is too sugary for you, this is a great alternative.

When local businesses collaborate, we all win. In this case, employee-owned Breakside Brewery teamed up with Salt & Straw Ice Cream to create a full-bodied sweet + salty beer with a smooth, roasted finish. When this beverage is in hand, there’s no need for dessert (okay, maybe there’s still room).
